Depends on the car. In my TBird it's accessible from the trunk. That's a better location than underneath, crawling in the mud.

Yours is in the tank because you converted to FI. Carbed cars are going to have it mounted externally. Agree that in tank pumps run cool and stay clean and have no downside other than in some cases accessibility. In the C2 that would be an issue.

That is the last place you would want it mounted for a carbureted midyear.

You have to be careful with the term "low pressure"'; on C2 Corvettes with WCFB, AFB or Holley carbs anything over 5.5lbs is asking for flooding - and, no, I don't know of any with that low pressure designed for C2 gas tanks.

Not that I am aware of. But you could use a regulator and a return line and do what you want, pretty much. I would not deadhead a 30+ psi pump into a 4 psi regulator, though. Main issue with carbureted cars today is that today's gas boils unless it's pressurized. FI cars don't care. Carbureted cars, running at atmospheric pressure in the carb, do.

Vapor lock can be a big issue with modern gas and old "pull type" mechanical pumps; also, try to find a "good" mechanical pump rebuild kit right now. No, not the Chiwanese crappy kits that put out overpressures, like 10 psi, but a good Echilin or Walker kit.

They're getting tough to find.

Also, some original mechanical fuel pumps are notorious for "pin walk out"; e.g. the actuating arm pivot pin starts moving out of its holes, and the symptoms can vary widely making it had to troubleshoot.

I fabricate a bracket to hold that pin in; as to "in tank" pumps, many classic cars have shallow gas tanks and just plunking a pump in there can be problematic with the lack of depth and fuel slosh - it may require making an anti-cavitation sump in the tank where the pump can be located.
