I have never noticed the fans on hers run after shutdown. I wonder it there is something different in cooling with the n54 vs n55?

There is a sensor in the lower radiator hose, passenger side. If it is shot, which mine was twice now, over the course of 6 years, it can keep the fan running after the car is shut off. This is only because the radiator fluid is low, and the car is running hot. Take that as a hint that there is a problem that needs attention. Once that was fixed, no more fan after shut off.
I think that if the fan runs after shut off, you need to get the cooling system looked at.
BMW's are funny. They'll warn you through hints that something is up. If your perception is working correctly, and you get it looked at soon enough, the fix is usually something simple.

On the X5M is not uncommon to run the water pump and cooling fans after a hard run. I only get the fans staying on after running in "M" mode and playing hard. I did the launch control the other day coming home from work. I had about 3 clear miles so I let her rip, pretty cool.
When I got home the truck ran the fans for a little bit sitting in the garage to cool itself down.

BMW is the only car out there where a water pump is a normal wear item. Everyone I know who owns one, regardless of vintage, has to replace the water pump every 40-50k.

The f'n oil change was $150.

Shit! I changed my wife's oil last week in her '01 Odyssey for less than $30 including 5 quarts of premium synthetic oil and a Genuine Honda filter!

Not mine.

I shit you not when I tell you my old '87 e30 had more than 250,000 miles on it with the O.E.M. clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, rear diff., brake master cylinder AND water pump (among other parts I never replaced.)

Car was amazing, I called that joker der Tuetonic Terminator due to its inherent longevity.

No, but I know the cost. However, this isn't a 4 gallon oil change.

I use to have to pay $200 to get the oil changed in the Lotus. They had to take part of the bottom of the car off just to get to the engine.

I'll be doing the oil changes myself from here on out. I checked on it, and there is nothing special to do, like on the Lotus, it is just a regular process.

Fortunately, I never had to get an oil change on the 7-series I had briefly.
I hear that would have sucked.
