For now, I'm gonna request a credit freeze. I will request a free credit report from each of the three reporting agency, but spread it out over the next year. Equifax next month, TranUnion in March, then Experian in August.
I also plan to contact my Credit Card Companies and discuss options with them. May not hurt to talk to my banks as well. Plan to monitor my own credit more closely. |

As someone said earlier, taking Equifax up on their "free credit monitoring offer" eliminates your right to sue them. I do credit for a living and monitor mine very closely. Your plan is pretty much the best we can do as mere mortals. Credit cards aren't the problem though. One call and they expunge the fraudulent charges and send you a new card. Here is the real threat. If someone opens , let's say, a home equity line of credit or even a mortgage with all of your information, (and it happens more often than you think), it is virtually impossible to prove that it wasn't you that did it. You are on the hook for the amount that was drawn, (usually a substantial amount). The red tape and hoops that you'll have to go through, to eliminate it from the credit agencies, and the bank, is just mind boggling. New accounts that aren't yours are the real threat, credit cards included. The only way to really monitor your credit efficiently is to have real time access to each of the three credit reports. Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. Unfortunately, the lag time from when an account is opened to the time it hits the report is over a month. You'll receive your first bill before it shows up on the report. There is no perfect answer here. It is reactive, not proactive. |

Check you credit card daily for weird transactions kids.
Mine just got wacked last night for $382.00 at a costume shop in Florida... Dispute, cancel cards, get new ones, rinse & repeat. Equifax sucks and will be sued. I don't know if I mentioned that yet, but there it is. |
