The Big Questions: Libya, 2012 and the GOP Kingmakers

Quote:
“Is Obama taking a big political risk with Libya?”
Critics have accused the President of haste, dithering, weakness, lack of clarity and an obsessive hunger for multilateralism. But Obama has defanged his opponents with a policy that balances U.S. interests, values and capacities. The Administration has achieved the high ground by acting in concert with NATO, and Obama is being careful to avoid a military quagmire if Gaddafi holds on.

“Forget the 2012 Republican candidates: Who are the GOP kingmakers?”
The trumpeting call from Beltway salons, New York boardrooms and elite-elephant watering holes: Where, oh, where is the one candidate with the focus, drive and character to beat Obama? Party titans like Governors Chris Christie of New Jersey and Rick Perry of Texas are seeking a viable nominee. If potential candidates Haley Barbour, Mitch Daniels and Mike Huckabee pass on the race, they will join the kingmaker caucus. What do all of these leaders and many of their financial backers have in common? No great enthusiasm for the de facto front runner, Mitt Romney.

“The new Census shows huge Hispanic population growth. What do the numbers mean for Republicans?”
Demographic devastation, unless they act fast. The number of Hispanics nearly doubled in the past 10 years, to more than 50 million, adding many new and future voters to the Democratic Party. Almost every county in the nation saw an increase, from both immigration and births, including such traditional GOP redoubts as Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina. The trend toward Democratic dominance is inexorable unless the Republicans can engage Hispanics with a more appealing immigration policy and — by showcasing leaders such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval — a more inclusive face.

Why do all of the Hispanics vote for the Democratic party??

Nevermind. I remember now... and it is terrifying.

I think it works both ways … would you Vote for anyone who didn’t have your best interest in mind? Probably Hispanic’s, no different than most ethnic groups, get a little pissed when people who know nothing about then, paint them all with a negative brush. Most ethnic groups tend to remember what people are saying about then come voting time.

They don't. See Texas. Population keeps getting more and more Hispanic, Republicans keep gaining more and more power.

The 2008 Presidential Election was a BLOWOUT. Obama crushed McCain. Obama beats McCain in southern states like Virginia and North Carolina.

McCain won the state of Texas by double digits: 55% to 44%

Obama did, however, do better with Latinos than Kerry or Gore. In Texas, he won the Latino vote ~ 60-40 over McCain.

Think about that. The Latino population as a whole is still FAR away from enjoying the same income levels as whites. Yet already, 40% of them support the Republican candidate in a DOWN year with a wildly popular Democratic candidate and a terrible Republican candidate.

The myth of the Latino-Democrat voting block is just that - a myth.

I was actually just looking at numbers from previous elections trying to un-myth things by the numbers. They aren't quite as skewed as far as some make it sound but a 20% gap is still a huge number. Especially when you consider that even in a blowout election the popular vote was only a 7 point margin (53-46).
