Default Dave's cycle accident update-- complete with xray pics

Dave saw the surgeon who fixed his leg today. He's allowed to go from no weight bearing to 50% weight bearing and will see him in another 5 weeks. ( he was hoping for 100% weight bearing but it is a move forward )

pics of the surgeon handiwork

I say he has about 10 lbs of hardware added there. The miracles of modern medicine

He has 100* movement on his knee and is doing well. ( he is a bit white from not going outside but getting the OK for some weight bearing will make getting out easier)

Ive got something similar. Mine runs about 3/4 length of my left femur, my X-rays had the rod, 2 screws at the bottom, 2 at the top, and wire wrapped around the femur in multiple places.

During surgery, the Dr was tapping the pin in place, and my femur split from hip to knee. They retracted the pin and had a pin air lifted from Mobile Alabama in, and it was inserted instead. The surgery went so poorly, that the Dr initially told my parents (I was 10), that there was a good chance id never walk again without a violent limp, if walk at all...because the bone literally splintered apart.

I was in a body cast for 3 months ( My 3rd), and was up standing not long after I got out of the cast, was back in school the following year.

Mine was ot fix a wicked bow in the femur...not be "Structural"...like Dave's. What can they do about the shards of bone?

I noticed what looks like a chunk of bone just hanging out there and wonders about it, maybe they should have wrapped a wire or hose clamp in it to bring it back in.

Sounds like you went through a lot when you were a kid Tommy, how is your walking now after all these years?

Would you say that the pain you went through back then was worth it?

Doesn't look all that finished
Why is there a loose piece of bone hanging out?
Alignment looks a bit off too

Back over 50 years ago, my sis/2 kids/and Brother in Law, driving a VW bug on a 2 lane bridge, got hit head on even they pulled over to the right and stopped, at about 60 mph, took out the entire car, smashed BIL's left femer up into the pelvic bone and totally shattered everything in site.....

he got the second stainless ball/socket hip joint ever done, some Army hospital in North Virginia near DC....he worked for Feds, so got the best care possible...he walked with a limp but no crutches for some 30 years after.....

Sis and the two kids were not all that seriously hurt, sis has a scar that has receded into her hairline over the decades, head hit thr RV mirror....
