I use this model Winchester XTR around the lake, with 22mag hollow points. Provides good range, a little nostalgia, and cheap enough ammo..

Decades ago, when groundhog hunting, out on a horse farm in western Maryland, I totally loved my 270 win special.....it did not kick like a 30.06 and it is a better round on the ballistics charts.....certainly lighter.....

the rifle was a Belgian Mauser, Douglas barrel , steel rings, with Redfield on top, nice fancy custom stock also.....

pick a gnat off from backside of the moon.....

I never forget one chuck, I denutted the little bastard on first shot, knocked him over and tossed his ass a good distance with the second.....about 200 yards, then ran up to point blank as he insisted on still kicking....tough little bastard.....took TWO shots from the .45 to quite him down......give him a total respect and A for trying.....

I have a Marlin XL7 .270 and i love it. Sure its cheap but its accurate and so far 100% dependable.

I guess it depends on what you want to spend. My whole setup was under 500 with scope but ive taken deer, coyote and Hogs with it and never once have i felt i didn't do it as humanely as can be.

The .270 is my favorite round and the Marlin XL7 is a great bang for the buck IMO. There are so many to choose and im sure there is something better out there but realistically a person can only shoot so many ya know.

You can get a box of hollow point ammo for $325.00, for when the shtf, and regular ammo is pretty cheap too, hu ?

I have shot a bunch of woodchucks. My rifle is a worked over 25.06 Rem BDL 3-9 Redfield with carefully made hand loads, but it’s not a true varmint rifle. It’s more of a good all around rifle (varmint’s, deer, target, long range shooting.)

A varmint only rifle I would stay in the small bores. (22-24) you really do not need a bigger caliber rifle for varmints. Ammo is cheaper recoil is less noise(and that can be a big factor in some areas) is reduced.

I know the AR, and clones can be used for that purpose, but I would stick with a GOOD quality bolt action small caliber center fire rifle. There are a lot of companies that make good rifles but Remington and Savage should be high on your list! Scopes I highly recommend Leupold! All my newer purchased rifles now use Leupold glass. The old Redfield I put on the 25.06 in mid 70s when I bought rifle and it works too good to change!

How 'bout this one ? I'll have to go and see my cousin's arsenal, and ask him too.. I should have said that I want the reach out ability, as well as cheap ammo, and really common ammo .

Marlin’s New XL7 Bolt Action Rifle

I personally have not fired that rifle, but a couple people I know have them and their happy with them. I noted Rem and Savage as I have done a lot of shooting with them over the years. There are many good companies that make that style of rifle.

Ruger® 10/22® Autoloading Rifles

The best all around .22 RIM FIRE sauto rifle on the market. It’s like a Chevy small block its ok stock but can be modded till you run out of money. Most are very accurate right out of the box, I have shot many and owned 3 over different times.

Not what I would really call a varmint rifle though unless your shots are under a (Depending on gun/shooter)100 yards or so.

I only have 3 acres, so 100 yds is all I really need....I think that this may be the ticket then. My cousin, whom I just spoke with , recommended this as his all around favorite coon gun.

Sounds like a plan then. Do get a decent scope for it. A variable with not over 9 power max.
Practice a lot with it, ammo is relatively cheap especially if you buy it by the brick (500rds)

If you're looking for efficiency, it's hard to beat a 7.62 minigun.
