Default Went to buy a car, and the guy flaked...

Long story short, I found an 05 Jetta GLI 6sp that I wanted to buy off a private owner from autotrader. Line of communication was great thru the whole process up til the end. He returned my calls promptly, sent me everything I asked for, and was great to talk to.
I had arrainged to pick the car up yesterday afternoon, and pay him what we agreed on. The car was about 3 1/2 hours away from me, so yesterday, I take off, call him to let him know I'm on my way. Didn't hear back, got an hour down the road, called again, sent a txt, got nothing. Started to have a bad gut feeling, and called a couple more times before I got any further, nothing.
I stopped drank a beer got something to eat, still had not heard back from him so I headed home, and I still have not heard from the guy?? Very strange situation if ya ask me!! Oh well, guess it wasn't meant to be, but just frikken weird!!

I had somthing similar happen to me, guy want to buy my car drove from tamp looked at the car low balled me, I declined his cash offer. He called a day later, then wanted to buy my car at my price. I was like cool, waited for the guy to show, called him several times never returned my call, then called me a few day and want to come then to get the car, By then I had a new buyer who payed more, so in the end it worked out for me.

Call him from another number that he won't recognize if he is ducking your calls from your cell..

I've bought and sold dozens of cars private party and never had any real drama.

The seller probably got a better offer after he talked to you. Kind of a POS for not letting you know though.

Selling a boat last spring...A guy drove an hour to look, gave a small deposit and said he would be back in two days. That night the wife called, said husband didn't have money and didn't consult her about buying any boat and I was an A.H. for trying to push it over on him. Demanded I return his deposit and he would not accept a call nor did he pick up the boat...poor fella !

That's what I'm guessing happened too, the listing was also taken off autotrader last night as well.

Really, why? I've heard they are pretty decent cars, and I'm just looking for a small DD with decent mileage.

same thing happened to me 6 months ago. car was also located 3 hours away. we had agreed to meet at 4 to see the car. seller calls me at 3 to tell me he sold it to someone who had cash because he didn't want to risk losing a buyer. luckily, the car was located a mile from where i worked so i had to make the trip anyways. luckily i found a better one a few months later.

I've known six or eight people* who owned a Jetta and, in every case, the car had a propensity to shed parts. It typically wasn't drivetrain problems, just everything else.

* Yeah, not a huge sample.

Consider yourself lucky. Those Mark IV Jettas are junk. Bought my kind one two years ago and spent at least two grand getting it operational. The electrical issues are common and the build quality is garbage. If you must have one, buy the wagon version. That one was made in Germany and doesn't suffer the same problems as the Mexican built cars.

Guess I was lucky then!! I talked to several who have have them and love them. My sis in law has an 04 TDI and has been trouble free for quite a while. I looked for a tdi, but discovered the gli, really like the looks of them compared to a reg jetta, so wanted to get one.
