Default Just got off of a company all-hands call...

Our small firm ($10 mil revenues) landed our feet in the door of a $100 Billion market cap company last August. Since then, we have exploded in visibility within the client, in comparison to Deloitte and Accenture. Client had a bad quarter last December, and ended up cutting the budget across the board for the project we're currently on. Which meant we were losing 7 resources, but a dozen of us stayed on. Accenture was booted and Deloitte was cut to offshore only.

Fast forward to Corona virus and the whole world is falling, our firm has been informed that we have made the most impact of any partner across the entire ecosystem, and they have returned our 7 positions and signed financial contracts to keep us engaged for the next couple of years....minimum. We delivered a public facing site for the client on COVID issues in 4 hours.

TLDR
  • Our firm works remotely by default.
  • We have a $100B benefactor that loves us.
  • Our jobs are secure for the next few years

We are truly blessed considering the current environment.

I'm sorta in the same situation. Our company is already 100% remote offices, almost all of those are out of our homes, and we have a very big new customer that everyone here has heard of that we're doing a big project for, and if it pans out (which it will), the sky is the limit. We haven't missed a beat during this whole fiasco, and they counted on us not to. Other larger companies aren't able to weather this sort of thing as easily as smaller and more nimble companies. We don't have to send people home to work when they aren't used to that. I guarantee most office employees are not going to be as efficient working remotely, at least for awhile and maybe never. You're either cut out for it or you aren't.

It helps too that our software enables healthcare providers and insurers to see all sorts of outcome-based data at whatever level they want, from individual patients to locations to drug interactions across however you want to slice it up, etc etc. And it's very automated and uses machine learning very smartly in key areas. It's amazing how in just a few years the medical record "industry" has completely evolved into something that would have seemed impossible just 10 years ago.

My daughter normally works from home. Her company also deals with healthcare provider software. She was supposed to travel to India for work sometime but that's all been canceled now.

GWiz stole them. She's sequestered here at the Wiz compound.

She has 5 monitors and is living with it, but is seriously limited by it.

She's behind that rig 12+ hours a day.

GWiz knows we are going to be giving her a graduation gift at the end of the year when she finishes GT with her Mechanical Engineering degree...likely with a 3.8+ GPA.

My initial intent was to buy her a massive notebook computer similar to the 8K one I currently own, but the rig she has in the picture is brand new and she bought it. Thus, we discussed shifting to me building her a tower to have at her home, so that's the focus.

She currently owns 10 of those monitors, but only has 8 at GT. Instead of buying her a notebook, I'm going to build a bespoke tower for her to have at her house. That rig will be equipped out of the box for 12 monitors natively (not using the USB converters that she uses now), but can even add a 3rd video card to support 18 like mine. She'll be able to have more than 12 using the adapters, but I'll let her grow into that.

So...$8k notebook is out, and $6k tower is in play. She will have the best of the best to start life, and because not notebook, I will save me money and she will benefit more.

What I'm hearing now is India is ****ed. All of these "garage" places that they have all of their tech support solutions have been disbanded by the government due to the virus.

Problem is...the garage has the bandwidth to contribute to the cause, but when you disband the people working there, their individual homesteads don't have the infrastructure to support work-from-home protocols.

This could set India's hold on our tech industry back a few years. This is why said client brought back our 7 assets. Grab them when you can, cuz who knows when this is going to end.

This can be a great opportunity to put the jobs back into the USA. Let the "high tech" Indian support fall by the wayside. Time to chuck China the finger too. They threatened us with withholding medical / pharmaceutical supplies so that should be brought back too.

If we don't squander this opportunity, we can put the USA back on top in all fronts once again.

Jeff, what this client has truly realized is that our firm, a boutique firm in the same industry as Deloitte and Accenture, (add IBM and E&Y), is that we are unique and committed to the client. We are not robots, we respond to the ebbs and flows of business and provide instant value. We build software when software wasn't asked to be built, but we build it because it solves a problem and makes the client better.

Our firm is flush with entrepreneurs. You all know my life story, and GWiz's too, and she and I are truly unique, BUT, the firm I work for is FULL of people just like us. That is why we stood out. Our experience was evident, and our work ethic was unmatched. At the end of the day, robotic Indian or Chinese tech workers can't replace truly energetic "good old American" entrepreneurs.

For us to keep this going as "USA", we need to continue to instill work ethic in the up and coming generation. There are no handouts, you must learn, and at the end of the day, you must be worth more than you are paid.

First, nice work Craig.

Second, an $8k tower and a $6k laptop? Here I am with a $200 Chromebook and a "7" plug. The values are the tv is a 4, the 'lectric heater is a 3, and the Chromebook is a 2. I have to choose which I plug in to the pedal powered outlet.
