Learn to shoot first. Go shooting with friends, and learn from them, and learn what type of gun you would like.
Should not be too difficult, with the clientele on TVB.

Also, you can go to a range that rents different types of guns, the more the better. Try a few, in different calibers and styles.

Find the one you like best, buy one, then practice, practice, practice! Take shooting classes if you want.

It's like any other toy. Buy something basic and inexpensive, use it for awhile until you learn/decide what you really want.

Or...you could just meet StangKiller. If asked what type of guns he has, I believe the proper response is: "One of each".

PS...If you are going to break into a house, it would probably be best not to break into his...

what kind of gun you thinking about? Pistols, rifles, shotguns? Were going to the range on Sunday if you'd like to join us, primarily for shooting clays but can shoot pistols and rifles too if you're interested.

I am just not liking the near proximity of some transitioning areas and those folks don't steal from each other, they steal from the surrounding areas. I'd like to know we are at least somewhat protected in the house and for my wife to have a fighting chance in my absence. I'd like a low maintenance, not too awkward, deadly weapon that I'd prefer not to have to fire a second time.

I am gun ignorant and am concerned about my own safety so I definitely want to do this the right way.

I appreciate the offer but I would be pretty embarrassed to show my ass in front of anyone here. An instructor is trained not to laugh

A mistake or mis-step could be catastrophic so I would rather take the baby steps instead of jumping right in.

This is a very recent decision so I am in the "information gathering and research" phase currently. Let me get a bit further along and I would greatly appreciate a raincheck on your offer.

I recommend you stock up on a bunch of canned food items.

Your wife can simply throw the cans at any intruders. If both you and your wife are present, that doubles your firepower right there.

I am not sure we would stand a chance without 20-30 3rd graders having our backs.

Sounds like you're looking for a shot gun...I built a Remington 870 20ga for my wife that might work well for you. I love to share the sport and am a member of two gun ranges here in town, so it's free to go anytime you'd like. I've got a pump shotgun guns in 12 & 20ga and a semiauto 12ga, if you want to come feel the difference in recoil.

The clay throwers we have at the range are a bit slower than the skeet at American shooting sports, so it's be a great place to start.

Stangkiller will show you the ropes. Don't worry about making mistakes.

Just be sure to post them up here so we all can get a good laugh. Preferably with video.

You may be on to something. I may make a video of day one and assuming I live to see another day, I'll post a comparable video at day 365 and see if anything has changed aside from even less hair and more fat.

StangKiller would never take a newbie (from FLA) shooting, and take vids of them so we all can get a good laugh...

...Yikes!

If you can take Stangkiller up on his offer, do it.
Best way to start is to get some time in with someone who can show you the basics, and let you handle different types of guns. You need to learn the basics before deciding on what kind of firearm will work for you. It's fun, and having the experience will raise your comfort level. Your comment on what you are looking for in a home defense gun shows you need somebody who can walk you through your choices.
