The Kia dealership here in Joplin became the #1 Kia dealership in the nation after the Joplin tornado. Something like 18,000 vehicles were destroyed, most of them cars of course. Lots of people couldn't afford a new Toyota or Honda or Ford or even Chevy, but they could easily afford a new Kia.

Mrs. DAB and I were talking about all the cars that are flooded and all the work involved in getting new cars to everyone.

most insurance policies pay you the depreciated amount, not the original cost, of the car/truck.

so i can understand the lower priced Kias selling well, as many could afford them with their insurance pay off.

many people need their truck for their job. that is their rolling office. others need a car to get back and forth to their office job, so they can be less picky.

if i was a dealer, i'd be buying up every used car i could get my hands on 2-3 states away. you can't sell what you don't have on the lot.

houston has 2.3 million population, 6.5 million if you include the suburbs. that's a lot of cars and trucks that will need replacement. car makers can make a lot of cars, but not that many in 6 months.

start calling around.

Flooded cars that have been unscrupulously refurbished will be dirt cheap.
Non-flood cars will be at a premium.

wonderful!

but.....no matter what your situation at home, whether mom and dad can afford to send a lunch with you or not, you still have to fill out their application form.

218,000 students = 218,000 pointless applications. why? so the gov't files will be complete, lest someone commit fraud against the gov't.

a box of paper is 5,000 sheets. so this will generate 44 boxes of useless forms. unbelievable.
I wonder if they can do a paperless application online.

I'm sure we can get clarification if any of that is remotely accurate.
Inventory levels have been high due to sharply declined YOY sales. Supply won't be an issue. The countless stores that lost 100% of their inventory will take a while to recover.

200 is a very low number, McRee Ford lost 800 new Ford's.

Don't know about how the insurance will pay, none of our were flooded.

I worked at a small used car lot once (30 cars) and one night every car on the lot got keyed. And not something that would buff out. They were insured, alright, at 1K deductible per car.

Fun little tid bit, CarMax is self insured, thats going to be one hell of a right off depending on how many stores lost units. I think there is 6 stores in Houston They will be trucking in Houndres of cars from the other 175+ store nation wide, maybe not all but within trucking distance. Because they will go through inventory. Nows the time to sell to them and get top dollar

Default Update: Not Good

So we finally went to check on Mom's house. It took on water. Spent the day ripping out carpeting and drywall and spraying bleach. Not horrific damage, but even an inch is a big hassle.

Sucks, but could have been worse. Good luck with the cleanup.

Hassle indeed. My inlaws house was flooded three times. First similar to above... maybe 6". Second time it was ~4' - enough to float the TV. Third was no work at all... house was just gone.

Hope the cleanup and repairs go well.

I heard them say that on average, a couple of inches of water does about $21,000.00 damage and the average flood insurance claim is $39,000.00.

Where do you live? If you need help on weekends, I'll pitch in. I need to do talentless stuff. (No mudding)

I can help cut and hang sheetrock or whatever. I can paint walls.

She's south of you down Barker Cypress a few miles. I'll keep that in mind, it might be a while, we just filed a claim today, so an adjuster has to see the damage, first. I'm worried most about matching the carpeting....it was just put in last year. Hopefully we can get the same thing, even if it will be a different dye lot.
