I paid a guy $1000 to do various things to get my hot tub back into operating condition. Nothing major, some concrete work, he's an employee at a local pool and spa company, wanted to make some extra money. Said he'd get it all perfectly in shape and start it up for me, which is great because it's a PITA. And...this is what I get. This is less than a day from when he said it was perfectly fine and ready to go. Plus I didn't show the part where I had to remove the plug he left in that disabled the skimmer, and the noise the pump was making because of all the leaves blocking the other two drains.

I made the classic mistake of paying him before he was completely done. He did the concrete work I wanted, and said after it cured he'd come back and clean it and get it going. Also I'm still waiting for my new cover, the old one is barely adequate but will be OK for now. My back has been super jacked up so I haven't been able to crawl into the pump room and just let him handle this. After all, he works for a pool and spa company, surely he can get a hot tub started up and checked out without adult supervision (he's only 40...)

Turns out, he's a complete idiot. I'm just going to do it myself, screw him, he's not touching it ever again. Lesson learned (for the 10th time...)

Also the concrete work he did was really amateurish, but it will suffice. At this point I just want to use it, aesthetics aside.

I know, should have given him half and held the rest until completely done. But seriously, all that was left was something I've personally done 50 times, it takes about four hours to do it right, and the vast majority of that time is spent sitting around waiting for the thing to fill up with water. He didn't even clean the filter which really needed to be cleaned out. Just basically a big middle finger to us.

If I had an employee that did shitty side work like that, I'd be having a serious talk with him regardless of whether it was any of my business or not. He would still be a representative of my company and that kind of crap runs off current and potential customers. His job with me would very well depend on him completing his side work.

Yeah, he did it as side work. The reason? The pool and spa company said they were too busy closing down pools to mess with this until middle of next month. I didn't want to risk freezing weather and a non-working hot tub. I'm still debating what to do about it, other than I know he's not going to touch it ever again. Ordered a new filter for it, something I asked him to do and he said "Your filter is fine." and then found out he never looked at it and it is caked with shit. I mean, it takes five minutes to take it out, hose it off, and see if it's OK. It's not.

My plan is this for now:

1. Let it sit without power today to see where the water level ends up. I have a leak somewhere in the top 3"-8" of the hot tub. I've fixed these before, and already suspect I know where it is.

2. Drain hot tub completely, vacuum it out with shop vac, wait for new filter to get here (probably Tuesday evening via Amazon), and put it in and begin filling that evening. It will be full before bedtime.

3. Start it up Wednesday and see how things are working. As it was, the filter was so clogged it wasn't heating (underflow condition) and if there is still a problem with it I will get the pool and spa company involved (since they installed the equipment) but at least I will be able to circulate water which will negate any freeze issue for now.

4. New cover should be here in a couple of weeks, a really nice one that you can walk on. By then everything should be ship-shape in time for hot tub season.

And if I do have to get the pool and spa company involved, I will definitely show them this video.

This. Reckon his boss wouldn't be too thrilled to hear that the guy is doing side jobs. The guy would likely get fired. Should get fired.
