The point of the story.

Except for the fact that I haven't truly lived the life of a pauper.

Matter of fact, I hate this whole camera thing. Too many are pointed at neighbors and in neighbors backyards/property. And although it is legal, I disagree with the law.
Wow, yes. Security where I live is a non-issue -- despite me having guns all over the house. My neighbor told me he has over 100 guns although he's not quite sure of the exact number, lol.

In 2020 I was a bit concerned, although living 40 miles from the riots in Rochester, but I am the eternal pessimist. But I knew "the gang" would never make it past my neighbor's.

I'll be down pretty soon and we're also shooting to do a family reunion at the house for Easter.

Christ, sitting here in my office with my 18 monitors, I can't see out my front window, but that's where the monitor sits where I'd look out the window, now it has all of the cameras, so I can see everything.
Point a camera out your front window, and have that display on that one monitor. Duh.

All of my houses except the townhouse in Wash DC didn't require "extra" surveillance and security. My Florida house on a lake in the middle or orange groves we built 25 years ago didn't either. The developers greased enough palms to get zoning changes, the northern refugees from cold/crime/taxes moved in "en masse" and now the spike in crime has changed things for the worse - sorta sad.

And yeah, I remember my house in Maryland where I was 3 stories up with a circular saw sliding around on asphalt shingles at a steep pitch cutting holes int he roof for skylighs - I was younger but even so, what the hell was I thinking ?

I invested in a alarm and camera system on my house a few years ago.

As far as doing most work now I hire it out. I still do my own lawn mowing and raking (AKA leaf blowing) as my lot is loaded with serious leaf producing trees. (for you people that hate leaf blowers I live rural and the noise bothers no one)

Have a 4X4 pick up with plow and NH tractor with bucket so I still do my own plowing, some limited shoveling for snow control.

As a now long time retired construction worker I spent a lot of time climbing, on roofs and on ladders and scaffolding but now due to vertigo I no longer do..

Have some medical problems and surgeries done that precludes me from doing a lot of things I did all my life. Tire changing, oil changes and most other vechicle work for one. Its much easier to hire a good local and get other serious house maintenance done. Going to get the whole outside of the house painted in the better weather.

As a former very strong and competent do most anything mechanical type of person it sort of hurts, but time waits for no one. I'm lucky in the fact I have a good pension and SS and can afford to get the work done.

I finally realized that I, (at my size and age), don't need to be the one climbing in the attic, and paying someone else to do it is a good use of my resources. I personally struggle with that decision, as I like to do as much of the work myself as I can.
So is your plan to install 1 camera per monitor on your computer setup? LOL.

I'm thinking back many years where you posted what I think was a 16 monitor wall?? You've probably just reached the VR status at this moment and don't even need them.

18 monitors, 16 cameras, but no, only one monitor shows the cameras. I will take Snide's advice and plug in my 2nd web cam and point it out the window so I can see better what's going on just outside of my office window.

Had to take the screenshot a 2nd time because one of the windows had my Merrill Lynch accounts up. STS would have shit himself and never called me the "Loan Baller" again.

Edit: Shit, Windows couldn't even take the full screen shot correctly. Monitors are not in the correct order as they are physically.

Edit2: fixed image

Getting up on the roof is a bit scary at my age, although I still clean my chimney, usually in early December when I switch from wood to coal.

About 5 years ago the ladder blew down while I was up there -- long story, no harm done as it turned out, but a bit scary for an hour or so. But it could have been much worse, maybe fatal. Now I take my phone with me.

I plumbed my entire house when I bought it in 1981, including running a well line to it with the pump, pressure tank, etc.

But I hired a plumber last fall for the first time in my life. I wanted to change the bathroom sink fixture, and I'd bought a new one in January 2020 but it just sat here. Crawling around on my back on the bathroom floor, then getting up countless times to get another tool didn't appeal to me, so I kept putting it off. So I had the plumbers do that, change my shower fixture, and replace the beads in my water softener.

Screw it. Living as a pauper all your life eventually pays off -- when you get to the point of not minding to pay other people to do shit jobs.

My story is the same. A lifetime of living under my means and fixing ALL my stuff to save money, but also, so it was repaired or installed correctly. Just in the past couple years I've paid for services I used to do myself, and it feels weird. I guess I'll have to get used to it. Agree with getting up on roofs, etc. My balance is not what it used to be and I personally know two guys who fell off of ladders. One died, the other had a long rehab. Both early 60's at the time. The one who died fell less than 6 feet.
