For those of you who PooPoo that it's a real issue, studies have shown:

That extra hour of sunshine – for the early risers – comes with "a 24% increase in heart attacks on the Monday following the switch to daylight saving time," or that an average rate of fatal automobile accidents increases by 6% nationwide or that "there were 3.6 more (workplace) injuries on the Mondays" following the feckless change up. Not to mention government-inflicted chaos for parents getting thousands of children up an hour earlier.

This thread alone demonstrates why we still change clocks twice a year…because no one agrees if our small sample of the population can’t, then neither can the gubmint folks

Correlation isn't proof of causation.

The poor parents suffering "chaos" for getting their little tykes up early need to grow up.

I had been waking up on my own at 6:30 when it started getting light. Woke up at 7:15 this morning, feeling fine, so I've adjusted by a quarter hour so far. By Monday I think I'll be back to normal times, maybe a day or two before.

I never get up til 8 or later, so the mornings are the same for me. But I get an extra hour of daylight in the evening.

Daylight is advancing by 2:57 per day (at my latitude: 42° 52') so in a few weeks it will be light when you get up.

Having said that, I would challenge their idea that daylight has anything to do with when cows need to be milked (at least in the 1950s and '60s. Maybe everything has changed now).

They need to be milked about every 12 hours, especially * "fresh" ones. In December it would be dark during the morning milking, and getting dark soon after the 4 PM milkings began. In the summer, it would be light throughout both milkings.

* A "fresh" cow is one that has recently given birth and therefore has a lot of milk.

Since you don't like Wiki, maybe you'll believe it from a few farm publications. Maybe your parents were wrong.

Did you see the red parts? I never asserted that the reason for DST was for farmers, I just said that I heard it from my parents.

As for DST screwing up when cows give milk, I stand by that it doesn't matter, as the only thing that changes is the hands on the clock. They need to be milked about every 12 hours regardless where the hands on the clock are. Your first two links show that.

I wasn't trying to start a fight, I was just injecting some non-Google knowledge.

I didn't say that it screwed up when cows give milk either. I said that it was started in the US to reduce energy consumption (which is doesn't do in any appreciable way, hence my original comment that it should be abolished...like all laws that don't achieve their intent)

I don't know one thing about milking cows or their lactation schedule.

I'm just pissed all the cool guys are on the East Coast and are 3 hours ahead of me. I know when I get up that they've already been on the 'barn for hours. I feel like I'm always trying to catch up.

So where TF are you around 10-12 PM eastern? -- that's the middle of the evening for you.

This place dies after 10 or so.

I've heard people say this, and although I have never made my living as a farmer, I have visited many at various times of the year. The busiest times are prepping the soil, planting, and harvesting, and from what farmers say, they work from the time there is enough light to see, until there is no longer enough light to see. They don't care what the clock says. So the whole "it's for the farmer's" thing never made any sense to me.

I always heard it was so little Johnny and little Sally don't have to stand by the curb waiting for the school bus in the dark. This never made much sense to me either, because if that really is a problem, why don't we shift the start and end times of the school day in winter, instead of jacking with EVERY ****ING BUSINESS in the economy?
