When I'm in line at the grocery store, I usually let the person or persons behind me cut in front of me if they have just a few items and I have a lot. Every blue Moon, someone extends me the same courtesy when the roles are reversed.

Having said that, I think the calculus in DJ's case is a lot more complex. I probably wouldn't have moved to the back of the line, but wait, we'd have to consider the apparent attitudes of the counter staff and any cooks who are visible. Are they black? Do they appear sympathetic to the black person asking to cut in line for the reason proffered? If so, maybe the best course of action is just to leave. Why take a chance on being served adulterated food?

I'm just thankful I have never been in that situation. I just go about my life trying to be courteous to everyone I encounter, unless they present a reason not to be courteous first.

This particular place is close to where my parents live and it's pretty much an all white staff. Not worried about food tampering especially when you can see them at the prep station making it.

i was telling Mrs. DAB about this conversation, and how i handle my life.

we then dipped into some delicious chocolate candy. i had her choose first. she did. then i chose one, and she was like "oh, so you're taking the 3 piece one", "well, do you want it dear?" "no"

gotta live what you preach.

if someone wants to cut in front, i'll let them. the food isn't that sumptuous, there is plenty for everyone, and it's not worth the fight, or even the yelling match. i'll get what i want, so will they, and we'll all enjoy our lunch peacefully.

no, i get it.

some blacks believe they have been wronged by "the man", and now it is time for those wrongs to be made right. they believe they are due all manner of societal reparations. jobs, money, privileges, quotas, places of power and trust, the whole lot. maybe even preferred seating, separate accommodations, whatever.

i've lost job prospects to minorities, so have others. i even was interviewed for a job long ago, and that job was to oversee "disadvantaged" contractors, to make sure they weren't messing up too much.

some of these things affect me, some don't.

but getting hot under the collar for a place in line at a lousy fast food joint is not worth the harsh words or time. if Ladasha wants to go first, go lady. i have all day. and maybe she will think about how mean this cracker is if I let her go ahead of me? "damn, that one white dude wasn't so mean to me, wonder why?"

it's like we have to learn all over the lessons that people like Jackie Robinson and Dr. King tried to teach others: don't go down to their level, be better than they are.
