Canon City Police Officers were dispatched at 11:27 p.m. Thursday to the 700 block of Whipple to check on the welfare of a Canon City Police Department communications officer who had failed to show for her late night shift and was not answering telephone calls.


Upon arrival at the residence officers were able to enter and found the bodies of Priscilla Samento, 49, of Canon City and Daniel Samento, a 56-year-old retired police officer of Canon City. Investigation is ongoing but all indications point towards a murder/suicide.



According to Fremont County Coroner Carlette Brocious, notification of next of kin has been completed.. Anyone who may have information pertinent to this case is asked to call the Canon City Police Department at 276-5600 or contact Crime Stoppers, information listed below.

I know more than a few retired LEOs. As difficult as it is to do that job, I think for some it is even more difficult to retire from it.

I always wondered if his retirement which came about early and suddenly was due to circumstances he was not telling us about. Someone in the CF thread mentioned he had lost 40 lbs. I wonder if he had health issues.

I know when health issues forced an early retirement for my wife, it changed our financial situation quite a bit. We've dealt with it, but it hasn't always been easy.

No personal insight here, but if he was as stressed out as it appears, it's likely related to that. I lost 30 lbs when my first wife left our marriage, and I weighed only 165 at the time. I went a week and a half without eating.

When you start thinking seriously about suicide, it's time to get help. I'm sure DaNN would have considered that a sign of weakness. Ironically, suicide is the weakest way out.
