Guitar upgrade inquiry.
My son,the beginner has a stock LTD. EC-10 with a Boss distortion pedal. He loves playing mostly Metal with it and I want to buy him some upgrades for Christmas.
What do the experts here suggest, tremolo bar, better pick-ups... brand and model numbers are encouraged so I will have a clue walking into a music store. |

Is he interested in a different guitar?
What amp does he have? What other pedals? Does he have a powered pedal board? |

Every Kid, Boomer with Bucks, and Music Lover at some point in their lives wanna be.. a Rock Star..
The Boomers With Bucks will spare no expense in getting the best Guitar, Amps, and Goodies in their Budget.. Guess what... 97.% of these Rock Star Wannabes give up; and have Nice Stuff to sell on the Cheap... and it's out there in the Secondary Market right now... Buy USED. Save BIG. Go to the most Music Oriented Pawn Shop in your area, Ask the Guy with the Longest Hair and Most Tatts what to get to compliment your Kid's Rig Set Up.. |

This is a total personal thing, you should probably ask him what he wants specifically, or have him do research on these things. It may be easier just to get him another guitar, they are kind of like guns...you can't have just one.
Opinions are like assholes, everybody got one. With that being said, I did a pickup swap on a Roadworn Telecaster (Mexican) with Tex-Mex Pickups...I swapped them out for handmade Lollar 52's and the difference is remarkable. I also swapped out the saddles with compensated brass and had a bone nut cut for the guitar and had a pro setup (not some Guitar Center cretin) done by an extremely qualified luthier (one of the best techs on the West Coast, serious...the dude is practically famous). It's a fantastic guitar. I play through a Fender Princeton Reissue. I have a few other guitars as well. |

Yep...the kid is a beginner according to the OP. That's also why I asked about a powered pedal board. That alone leaves room for lots-0-gifts for the next few years. If his genre interest changes from metal, still room for more pedals. A good dad would locate a 1971 Gibson SG with dual HB's and give that as a gift. |

I’d offer some suggestions as a long time teacher of private lessons but I’d get ragged on for bragging. Good luck.

Ah, brotherly love.
The best thing you can do is take his guitar to a teacher to make sure it is set up right. Then buy lessons. Lose the distortion for practice. Next year buy an amp in the $750-1000 range. Use this as a carrot to keep up with lessons. I hit craigslist and bought a 95 Tweed Fender Blues Jr. for $300. Sounds ****ing great. If guitar is shit, change strategy and start with a good, playable instrument. Amd lessons. Over and out. |
