Default [Woodworking] A Cutting Board of Walnut, Ash, Teak, and Cherry

Started this today for one of you broken toys here.

spent about 30-45 min sketching things out, figuring out a cool pattern i could make with the materials available.

2 glue ups, both about 24" long. will get planed flat on each face, then cross cut into about 2-1/8" thick strips, those then get glued up again with end grain exposed. should get 10 strips out of each glue up, than join those together in an alternating fashion for a cool result.

more tomorrow, let this dry all night.

don't be afraid to use glue, it's cheap (sort of). used about 1/3 of the bottle, will use about that much again tomorrow.

Titebond 3 - it's food safe and waterproof (so the board won't fall apart when you clean it, but don't soak it in water )

Those things are beautiful once complete. Wish I had the time/skills/ and equipment to do it.

Going to be beautiful, Douglas.

Titebond 3 is good stuff. I go through about three bottles of it a year.

Do you run the board through a drum sander after the final glue up?

Don’t have a drum sander. So it gets placed on a flat piece of granite, and high spots are sanded down with a handheld belt sander.

some scraping and planing gets us to this point.

will let finish drying overnight, then cross cut and glue again.

I mean, unhappy people need to cut stuff, too. Seems discriminatory to me.

Mine's been used as well, not as fancy as the multiple wood boards, but just as much appreciated!

cross cut to 2" thick, yields 11 pieces per glue up. keep the pieces straight, and then choose one from column A, and one from column B - wash, rinse, repeat, then add some glue. lots of glue....

almost ran out of glue from the first bottle (which was full yesterday before i started), thankfully, had a second bottle in reserve.

final piece will be about 12-1/2 x 19-1/4 or so. will round the corners later.

i did the glue up on the scrap piece of granite, which is perfectly flat (not sure the work bench is), so the cutting board should require minimal sanding to make it lay flat later.
