Perhaps you could find a self storage unit further inland and on high ground and park it in there. That way you could lock it up. I doubt I'd want to leave it in a public parking garage by itself for any length of time.

Generators are sold out already from Tampa to Miami...

I went to buy one today to replace my currently non functioning one. Fortunately our race club has two, so I'll have to borrow one if this becomes a threat. Spaghetti plots look like Fort Myers could be a direct target.

Not going to Houston, will curve north. Either the West coast of Florida gets hit, or Louisiana. Time will tell.

Lot of things can happen in a week. I will prepare anyways.
I have 1 generator. FIL has one, and he is giving me the little 3500 watter.
But, if its a cat 4 or 5, wont make much of a difference.
I am more concerned of the lack of response the insurance company will be.

I went to Home depot today to pick up some stuff. The parking lot was packed and most of the larger generators were gone.

I try to get inthe habit of starting mine every three months and letting it run. I screwed up when we moved down here and had to send it out to get repaired.

Good luck Craig. I hope this thing misses everyone.

I don't think they will know for a week where it looks like it will really hit.
I don't want it here and I don't want it to hit the USA at all so .......

I am willing it out to sea !!!

Already a run on gasoline. Took 5 5-gallon cans to fill up. Mid Grade and Premium were gone. It's only going to get worse as the week goes on. Fortunately, both my Tundra and Patty's Outback take regular, so if the gas goes unused, it'll get dumped into the vehicles.

I'm hoping for the best for all of you folks. I also have relatives in the Carolinas and Maryland.

There are so many fires in NorCal right now even though they are a hundred miles from us, the air is very smokey. I know that's nothing compared to what soma are going through in Texas, but the wife has asthma so we have pretty much closed the house up and are staying inside. We did get out on Friday and went to the County Fair for awhile. I quit smoking in '02 and when I go outside to do a little work around the house it feels like I smoked a few cigarettes.

If a cat 4 or 5 hits I don't care how you prepare it will be catastrophic where it lands the roofs shingles or tiles will not hold on with those sustained winds. I have impact windows along with accordion shutters over them and that may not hold. I also have a 45000KW whole house generator and I see that on its side as well as the AC unit and they are both anchored down well. When Andrew came through I was working with the police dept still I went to homested to help and all that remained from houses were the bare concrete blocks nothing else was found. At a cat 4 or 5 everything is fruitless. Remember that these storms spawn tornado's as well. If this strikes the entire east coast of Fl Houston will look petty as to the damage coming here.

A tip if you are evacuating.

Freeze a small cup of water, then place a quarter on top of the frozen water. Place the cup in your freezer. If the quarter is still on top of the ice when you return, then you didn't lose power and the food in your freezer should be okay.

Even if it means driving a lot further, try to go and stay with relatives or friends. Leave the shelters for those who truly have no other place to go. Resources can be limited for evacuees, don't use them if you can get to somewhere where you will not need them.

we are flying back to STL tomorrow. Becki's brother and GF who have lived on the island for 15 plus years will be flying out Thursday to join us at our house. He says he doesnt see anywhere within driving distance that is not possibly in the path.

Anywhere this thing hits will be toast. 185 MPH winds and barometric pressure still falling

200+ cars in line to get sandbags at the local fire department. REALLY?!?! Exactly how many sandbags are you going to carry in your passenger car or soccer mom SUV and how are those going to save your house? How about the 3-5 hours you sit idling, wasting gasoline?

Can't find water anywhere now, but there's not currently a run on beer, so I'll be fine. Got enough now to last a week!

Very glad I filled up the 5 gas cans yesterday.

9/5/17 5pm update. Still favoring the West side of Florida. And all maps point to it curling back into the state, making Fort Myers potential ground zero.

I would be packing up my important things and getting out of there. When we were evacuated for the fire here, I had a bout five minutes to grab what I could. At least you have more time.

Hurricane Irma is now the strongest storm in the recorded history of the Atlantic Ocean basin. The remarkable statistic comes after the 5 p.m. Tuesday advisory from the National Hurricane Center holds the storm's max sustained winds at 185 mph. This is unchanged from the earlier 2 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Wind gusts with the hurricane are now hitting an incredible 225 mph. For comparison's sake, the sustained winds would qualify for an F3 Tornado, and the gusts would qualify as an F4. As we all know, hurricanes are immensely bigger than tornadoes. Certainly brings pause to what lies ahead for those in the path.
