The GTA car is...errr...was back together!
... it's ugly, but mechanically (I hope) better than it was before the wreck.
Off to Mid Ohio to run an HPDE as a shakedown Wednesday/Thursday. Fingers crossed. I have everything I need to make it all nice and purdy but ran out of time. I figured if it was going to look like something straight out of "Death Race" I might as well finish off the look. This thing has been an adventure (the nice way of saying it). I've learned some lessons along the way for sure. All in all though, you can't beat it. I am under $2k into fixing it from the way it was. The funny thing is that I spent less time and WAY less money fixing it after I ripped off the entire front end than I spent fixing the dumbassery that was done by the previous owner. If that was the Corvette, it would have cost... ?? If it wasn't a complete writeoff, and I think it would have been, the body parts alone on the Vette would have cost way more than this did. |

Yep. They were on sale about a year ago for some crazy discount price so I bought 2 of them. I originally modified them and connected them into 1 long workbench but they wouldn't fit with the new car so I pulled them back apart.
In all honesty, unless you get them cheap I would get something else. They aren't nearly as sturdy as I would like without some additional bracing added into them. |

I agree they aren't that sturdy, but they are a decent little bench and the drawers are an added benefit. I actually have my Wilton vise mounted to mine... |

I'd love to have a nice table and cabinets. The problem is getting them to fit with all of the tires that I carry...
In a choice between a bench and tires, tires win. With the Vette I could fit the bench. This stock car is just so damn long that it makes it difficult to fit it all. |

It's a 26' Vintage. I should clarify... I have plenty of room for it all. I just don't have enough room for everything to be as neat and organized as I would like.
But let's face it. What racer has ever said that they DIDN'T want a bigger trailer? |

I didn't see the photo of your trailer the first time..
A lot of the guys put tire racks up on the side wall so there is still room under them for the car. Leaving room for a workbench and storage cabinets at the front. If you drive your car in though, you might want to put the tire racks on the right side to make it easier to get in and out of the car. |

i've built 4 workbenches for my woodshop: 3/4" plywood (you can top it with laminate, makes it really easy to clean), supported by 2x4s on edge, all that supported by 4x4 legs on casters. lower shelf also attached to legs. pretty sturdy, and cheap to build. lemme find a pic....brb.
edit: pic added- |

The rack I ended up using is actually a big heavy duty 2,000 lb garage shelving system that was slightly modified to work. The biggest factor? I'm cheap. Any wall mount rack that would come even close to being what I need costs a fortune, much less 2-3 of them to hold all that I need. |

You could (edit. probably) fit cabinets/a table to the front of the door if you were willing to let the tire tack sit directly in front of the door.

Don't you have a welder?
Not hard to fabricate something up yourself, or pay someone else to do it for you if you have too. I did a search for some pics for you. Might even make it fold so you can get it out of the way when needed. Another idea is make a few of these you can roll in and out of your trailer. Or find one behind a gas station or tire store. They sell them also but way to pricey if you ask me. enclosed trailer tire racks |

I've thought about doing that. I even considered the mobile cart version. Over the winter I am going to take a long look at where I am and see what path I want to take with the trailer. My other problem with the high mounted wall racks is again that these mofos are heavy! I don't love the idea of dead lifting a dozen tires over my head and having to do so a few times a weekend. As it is now, even my wife can get them out. I'm starting law school in a few months so I am planning on stepping back the racing a bit for both time and money purposes. If that turns out to be the case, I'll likely just stick with what I have. Yea, it could be improved for sure, but all in all, it's not a terrible setup. If I do decide to invest some $$ in it, I might just go full assed into it and get something new and shiny rather than dumping a bunch of $$ into this one. Yep. The wife will love that idea. |
