Default New Zealand mass shootings at mosques...

Quote:
4 in custody after New Zealand mass shootings at mosques; IEDs found in cars

New Zealand police said four people were in custody in connection with a mass shooting that claimed multiple lives at two mosques in the city of Christchurch Friday, and an investgiation into the killings revealed a number of improvised explosive devices in vehicles that were defused.

Mike Bush, the commissioner of the New Zealand police, described the suspects only as three men and one woman. They were apprehended by local police, he said. No motive for the attack has been determined.

Investigators did not rule out that more gunmen could be involved in Friday's attack, he said. Reports circulated that between nine and 27 people were killed, according to the New Zealand Herald, but authorities did not confirm those reports.

Police were also working to remove an unconfirmed video that circulated online showed a gunman entering a building and firing multiple gunshots at people inside. A man who claimed responsibility for the shooting reportedly published a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto prior to the killings.

Officers responded to a shooting at the Masjid Al Noor in Christchurch Friday afternoon and also responded to a second gunman at the nearby Linwood Masjid mosque.

Authorities were not sure if any other locations were under threat and urged worshipers to refrain from visiting any mosque in the country, said Mike Bush, the commissioner of the New Zealand police. Christchurch schools were locked down until further notice.

"We have one person in custody but we are unsure if there are any other people," Bush said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Friday's events were "one of New Zealand's darkest days."

Witnesses said the Masjid Al Noor mosque was full for Friday afternoon prayer when the shooting occurred. Len Peneha told the Associated Press that he saw a man dressed in black enter the mosque and then heard dozens of gunshots. That was followed by terrified mosque-goers running from the terror. The gunman ran outside and dropped what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon and fled.

"I saw dead people everywhere," said one nearby resident.

Another witness told TVNZ he saw three women shot and bleeding outside the mosque. A third witness told Stuff.co.NZ the gunman fired more than 50 shots.

"He had a big gun and a lot of bullets and he came through and started shooting like everyone in the mosque, like everywhere, and they have to smash the door and the glass from the window and from the small door to try and get out," he said.

Members of the Bangladesh cricket team said they narrowly escape the shooting at the Masjid Al Noor mosque. Players and coaching staff were reportedly getting off a bus when the shooting broke out. Tamim Iqbal, a batsman on the team, tweeted “entire team got saved from active shooters. Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers.”

Mario Villavarayen, a strength and conditioning coach with the team, told New Zealand media the players did not see the shooter but heard shots. He said they were shaken but unhurt.

“I spoke to one of them shortly after,” Vllavarayen said. They didn’t see anything but heard gunshots. They were at the ground and just started running. The coaching staff were all at the hotel.”

The team reportedly fled the scene on foot to Hagley Oval where it is scheduled to play New Zealand on Saturday.

I dunno; in the US there's one political party that sees them as valuable straight-ballot party-line voters... and thus are to be excused.

As I understand it, it used to be difficult even for an American to immigrate to New Zealand. It does sound like some leftist politicians think it is a good thing to let Muslims into their country. Those politicians have a lot of heart. Not good sense but lots of heart. Bless their souls.

Drone victims 'radicalised' at mosque
NICOLE MATHEWSON·09:49, Jun 05 2014

The parents of a man killed by a drone in Yemen say he was "radicalised" in Christchurch. But preachers at the city mosque say they are moderates.
Christchurch's Muslim leaders say they are shocked and "disturbed" by claims two men killed in a drone strike in Yemen were introduced to radical Islam at their mosque.
Australian Christopher Havard, 27, and dual New Zealand-Australian national Daryl Jones were killed by a missile fired by a US drone in November.
Australia's ABC news yesterday reported the pair had been on an Australian Federal Police watchlist because of their links to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) terror group.
Havard and Jones - who went by the name Muslim bin John - reportedly met in Christchurch after Havard converted to Islam.
Havard's mother and stepfather, Bronwen and Neill Dowrick, said their son joined the local mosque and told them that was where he first encountered radical Islam.
"When he moved into the mosque he realised what they were trying to convert people to. That's when he left and went to Dunedin. He didn't agree with what they were teaching," they said.
The then-imam of the Christchurch mosque, Hisham el Zeiny, said he had "never seen any signs of radical Islam" in Christchurch.
Havard had joined the mosque after asking to do community service there and appeared to be a "very normal guy".
El Zeiny said there had been no system for teaching newcomers about Islam at the time of Canterbury's earthquakes because the disaster disrupted normal activities.
He thought Havard could have turned to the internet to learn more and "probably" encountered radical Islam there, where it was "easy...to stray".
Documents released by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs revealed Havard was a suspect in the AQAP kidnapping of three Westerners in Yemen in December 2012. The trio were released about six months later.
Muslim Association of Canterbury president Mohamed Jama said Havard was "always in the mosque" during the two years he lived in Christchurch and seemed to be a "normal man".
Jama said he understood Havard left Christchurch to work in a halal slaughterhouse in Invercargill and later flew to Yemen.
Dr Mohammad Alayan, a former senior member of the Christchurch Mosque, said claims of radical Islam in Christchurch were "not true".
"The mosque in Christchurch is very against that. Islam is all about peace."
Farid Ahmed, who delivers weekly sermons at the mosque, said he was "disturbed" by the allegations and worried about the effect it could have on how people perceived the Muslim community.
"I don't believe it. Our community here, most of them are refugees; I myself came from Bangladesh 26 years ago. We are very grateful because this country opened their hearts to us."
Radical speakers could be found online but such material "has nothing to do with the mosque or the mosque community", he said.
"If [Havard's family] have any evidence they should provide it so we can deal with it, because we want to stop it."
Richard Jackson, of the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at Otago University, said he was sceptical of the allegations from Havard's family and feared it could damage the mosque's reputation.
"To think that they had to go all the way to Christchurch to get this material is a little bit farfetched. I'd be highly suspicious of this report."
He believed the pair would have "radicalised themselves" through material found online.
Speaking from Tonga yesterday, Prime Minister John Key said he did not believe Christchurch was a base for radical Islam but the security and intelligence services (SIS) were there "to monitor any lead that we might have if there's somebody trying to undertake the radicalisation of people".
"Where the Government has reason to believe that it has relevant information, you can assume that we would take that appropriate steps to monitor that," Key said.

Historically, multi cultural societies fail. You can’t force diversity upon people. You can’t expect people that are culturally polar opposites to get along. Some people might be able to do it, other people can’t. Human Beings just aren't emotionally developed enough.

Very sad. Sad and strange times we live in.

To add, the media and society are creating division while preaching a message of diversity and inclusion.

By backing one segment of society into a corner while trying to prop up another, they are essentially throwing gasoline on the fire.

Politics and personal freedoms aside, it's ok to hate on the right leaning white male, but god forbid somebody say something derogatory toward a person of color, a woman, gay person etc. Thought police gone wild.

By creating division and hatred, watching and what seems to be hoping for the violent results, they are having your cake and eating it too.

While there were problems and violence concerning immigrants to the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries, generally the people that were coming here were not that culturally different from the established population. They shared a religion, and generally the people immigrating here were all about assimilating and working toward common goals.

Now you have people that are very culturally different that don't have the desire to ingrain themselves in an already established culture. A lot of them just want to exploit, and bring the values of the place they left and change the places they move to. It doesn't take a genius to figure out there are going to be problems caused by that.

Just look at the Roman Empire and the Goths. We are following the EXACT same path.

I am very much live and let live, and I am extremely sad about what happened in New Zealand. It makes me sick and angry, but at the same time we aren't taking a pragmatic and logical approach to what is causing these problems.

There is nothing wrong with diversity, but there is something wrong with ramming something up your butt in the name of it...and then going into full on book burning political correctness mode if you say something contrary to the accepted narrative.

Yes, and the killer's weapon of choice was a AR-15 type "assault rifle", no surprise. After a similar situation in Australia years ago, Australia ban assault rifles and took the existing ones out of civilian hands. It worked well for them.

No one does better gun control than the US Army. They'll give you a weapon when they want you to have it. Otherwise it's a control item under lock and key.

Sounds like you advocating Posse Comitatus for civilian gun ownership. To do that you will need to have a very serious use of Martial Law.

I for one are under enough bullshit here in the peoples republic of NY, I do not need my guns under some army storage and use program. That shit might work well in countries where the people are subjects, in case you do not know it or understand it we are citizens here!

If only we had super strict gun control like Australia and New Zealand, this could have been prevented. And despite the fact the gunman livestreamed it on Facebook, tweeted about it on Twitter, and posted about his intentions on 8chan, the left is screaming that 8chan be banned. Hmmm, wonder why? That's quite the question.

Also the shooter, in his manifesto, specifically said he didn't like Trump and is an eco-fascist and takes his inspiration from fascists and whose perfect country is The People's Republic of China, CNN et al is blaming it on "white nationalists" and blaming Trump.

surely the killer knew that guns are strictly regulated in NZ, and that walking around shooting people in houses of worship was against the law.

i know, we'll pass another law!
