NASCAR: Remembering Tim Richmond
I was just checking youtube to see what I could find looking for some old races and came across this video.
If you remember him racing you will know how good he was, if you don't remember him or have not seen him race.. Either way, if you like racing...you owe it to yourself to watch this. That guy... well yeah... he was "That Guy" A great short Documentary |

Amazing talent as a race driver also.. They say the movie days of Thunder was loosely based on him, but that movie came no where even close to how he really was. |

I had seen that before but still a good watch. I was too young to really know what I was watching when he was still driving.
...although I did have this (built) in my room. Died at the age I am now. Crazy to think. |

This video has some good highlites of some finishes and interviews. I like the part where they are interviewing him and asked if he would have guess that he would have won 7 cup races that year after he did. He reply's that's not enough! I want more! I'm not greedy... I'm just stingy! |

Mortality. No one avoids it. Do the best you can, treat folks as you would your mother, and carry a big stick. This advertisement brought to you by Winston Cigarettes. Smoke 'em as you smoke people.

He set a great example for how not to live.
I took note of his death when it happened and the lesson sure was not lost on me. If he was that good, he'd still be alive. Darwin sure works wonders..... |

Tin Richmond had a career-best third place finish in points after winning seven events in 1986, his last full NASCAR season. Over a span of twelve races, Richmond earned three second place finishes, and six wins. The National Motorsports Press Association named him Co-Driver of the Year with Earnhardt after Richmond accumulated thirteen top five finishes and sixteen top ten spots. I have copies of the last couple of races he won.
He was too ill to start the '87 season. Halfway into the season he finally got well enough to drive at Pocono. Because of all the rumors no one would come near him in the garage. Earnhardt walked up, put an arm around his shoulder and said, "C'mon. Let's go show 'em how it's done." Richmond won that race in a car that developed transmission issues leaving him only fourth gear. Tim ran a total three races in '87, winning the first two and losing an engine in the third. Earnhardt stated once that Tim Richmond was his favorite driver to race against. High praise, indeed. He was one of the best of his time. He showed NASCAR drivers how to enjoy the perks that they risked their lives for each week. Private coaches, motor homes, and jets. Expensive cars and bikes, and lots of partying. And women. No one understood what AIDS was at the time and believed that only drug users or homosexuals could contract the disease. He passed in August of 1989 at thirty four years of age. Although his career in NASCAR lasted less than seven seasons he was named one of the top fifty drivers of all time in 1998. He was also inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2002. He was truly one of the best. |
