Default Dog Losing Fur

My older 13yo dog Max started losing his fur about a month ago. He’s on his second antibiotic and doesn’t look like it’s helping. Vet shaved those areas. Hair comes out in tufts and as can be seen, skin is covered with sores.

Anyone seen this before?

Looks like mange, or skin mites. Surely your vet has tested for this? Anyway, so sorry for your pupper. If your current vet isn't getting results, get a second opinion.

Looks like a fungal infection...change antibiotics.

Did vet Rx cephalexin?
Did vet Rx antibiotics for dogs correct weight (mg/strength).

And if it just started; what caused it?
Change in diet?
shampoo?
flea meds?
new carpet or bedding?
new plant/shrubs outdoors?

or

the crazy one: did dog suddenly develop allergies with old age?

Best of luck for the pup.

We have an appointment for a thyroid test and probably a dermatologist. I didn’t even know they had one for dogs? Been checked for mites and mange already.

On our second Vet too. Fired the last one after she shaved over his sores and caused them to bleed. Wife lost her shit.

First vet didn’t shave his back or butt. That was the second one. She shaved the barrel of his chest, literally cutting off a bunch of calluses. New guy seems much more empathetic towards Max and really took his time with the exam and shaving. No bleeding.

Changed diet about six months ago to a no fat science diet food because he was throwing up. We’ve started him back on a little normal food to see if that helps.

I’m thinking it’s possible he is just having issues with age, allergies or otherwise. Looking forward to seeing what comes of his thyroid test.

Something changed...it's easier for you to figure it out if current vet(s) cannot diagnose.

Allergies I've found in my dogs past and present:
corn (grain in food)
flea bites
mosquito bites
bedding material
lavender vines (at dog boarders)
astro-turf type carpet (at dog boarders)

The dogs butt is easily reached to biting-chew when itchy, and the back/shoulders easily scratched....doggy Prednisone stops the itch.

He seems fine otherwise. Dude eats like a horse and appears as happy as I've ever seen him.

It's me that's suffering. I have to carry his ass upstairs several times a day. Used to be it just hurt my back but now that he's furless, I've got dog ass all over my arm.
