Yep. Used to go to lunch in the one at about 10th and Mission in SF when I worked at 11th and Mission in the early '80's. Cheap and decent food. When they closed, a friend was going to buy a head and put it on his roof to piss off his neighbors but never did. Ever go to Don Ramon's for Mexican or The Front Room for Pizza? How about House of Prime Rib?

Well yes and no.

Touching (albeit fairly unrealistic) commercial. But of course there's the now "required" mixed race couple in it.

Clearly somebody hasn't told them that far more than half the country isn't that demographic.

Small world.
I grew up in Parkville and spent many Friday nights at that Burger King. I remember when it was a “Gino’s”

All the hot rods were there in the 1960’s & 70’s. And yes I’ve spent a few nights at the Thunderbird too. I was a kid but my BIL had a wicked ’66 Chevelle. And another BIL had a Road Runner. Also had friends with hot rod Camaro’s and Corvette’s, etc.

Also the Tops shopping center on Perring parkway. Most of the street drag racing was there on Perring parkway between the Tops and Burger King.

We probably know each other or know of some same people.

I always liked Dog 'n Suds, a similar operation to A&W. Good hot dogs and fries.

That's my story with StoryTellerStealth. Knew the same people, went to the same places and hung out or raced or ate or whatever but never hung out together. Now, decades later, we are enjoying the re-kindling of a friendship that never actually was.

I was willing to overlook that because otherwise, the ad was good, solid Americana, but yeah, you're right. Just got to sneak that little bit in.

That whole commercial is woke. How many black Americans had a new Nomad in 1957?

I agree. None of that creamed Horseradish. The straight atomic hot stuff that makes you cry and sweat at the same time. Used to stop at Harris Ranch a lot in the 90's and early 2000's when driving the 5. I'd sit at the counter and have the tri-tip and eggs and be in and out in 25 minutes and back on the road.
Great times. It was $7.25 back then!!!

Well, first of all, I'm sure some did have new cars back then, but since the flashback scenes are of the husband going off to Vietnam, the car would have been several years old by that time. We started sending troops over there in the 60's, and at that point, it was just a used car.

Ok. How many black Americans had a used Nomad in the 1960’s?

I’m surprised there wasn’t a white guy cleaning the windows.

Let's say the guy deployed early on to Vietnam, conservatively in 1965 (most soldiers went later than that, but let's just say he went early, in '65), making the Nomad an 8 year old Chevy. Did black people own cars in 1965? A black family owning a (conservative estimate) 8 year old Chevy doesn't seem like some kind of unicorn event back then.

Believe it or not back in that era a lot of black families in the Albany NY area owned Cadillac's. Yes they were a bit older but they had a lot of them. It was easy to tell a black funeral back them as not only was the hearse and flower car a Caddy at least 5/8 of the procession was a Cadillac. FWIW back in that era it was nothing to see 30-50 vechicles in a funeral. Most all black funerals went to one local cemetery that was on a main road so it was easy to see!

I grew up in the Rochester 'burbs, and we also saw a lot of "them" in old Caddies when we went into the cities.

The cars were all "n-worded" up and the drivers usually leaned way over with their right arm on the console so it was very noticeable from the outside.

We liked to jerk my (white) nephew's chain cuz he drove his barges leaning over like that too.

Fair enough.

Probably many Chevy Nomads were driven by homosexuals in the 1950’s-60’s as well. Since according to Madison Avenue 50% of the country are homosexuals and 80-90% of the country is black.

This was the case when I was growing up in the '60's and '70's in Oakland ca. One old preacher had a black '59 El Dorado convertible with all sorts of extra chrome trim and a brass chandelier hanging from the top bow. Wore fancy hats and alligator shoes. Many other caddy's were pimped out with the 'diamond in the back' small diamond back window, twin TV antennas, etc. Just like the song "Be Thankful For What You Got'' says. Seriously.
A Cadillac, even an older one, was seen as a status symbol to those who could not afford to buy a home or move up the socioeconomic ladder. They were all over the place.
That said, I crack up when I see commercials of black folks camping, mountain climbing, kayaking, etc. Beein camping 58 years and have only seen one or two blacks in the wilderness....one Female at Zion (with a white guy) and one female at Sierra Buttes with a group of white women. When I asked a black friend of mine how come blacks never went camping, he looked at me and raised his eyebrows and said "why would I leave a perfectly good house to go out and sleep in the cold and dirt?? You're crazy!"
