When my wife had hers this came up as well. It is a lot more money but I told her it was her choice. She loved to play bingo so she had a lot of information at her disposal. She came up with it wasn't worth the risk many still had to wear glasses to read or had halos at night so bad they could not drive. I just had mine done and went with the standard as well. My vision is almost perfect now except for fine print as was hers.

My wife had her eyes done two weeks apart. She went with the standard lenses as she figured the cost difference with using cheap readers from basically anywhere wasn't a good value.

When you say "fine print" do you mean you can read normal shit without readers?

I went for the Panoptics premiun lens $2,500/eye for near/middle/far correction in both eyes. Waited 5 weeks after right eye was done before doing the left eye, in a matter of days afterwards, right eye retina detached requiring a sclerical buckle (a strap around the eyeball) to secure it, shortly after that the left retina detached requiring surgery (each detachment requires a week of lying "face down" to heal), then a corneal scar on the left eye due to a nerve detachment - THAT required 8 weeks of drops every 2 hours of $20,000/week "miracle" drug called OXERVATE to "regrow" the nerve. 6 surgeries in as many weeks.

I can drive around town locally (barely) read and watch TV but I'll never have even close to normal vision. Not looking for comments/sympaty but this is a cautionary tale.

Do NOT have catarct surgery unless your vision is badly impaired and do not do the second eye just to "even them up" if there are NO problems. ESPECIALLY if you're older and myopic.. Be skeptical and don't buy into the hype about this surgery being "run of the mill".

THAT is not what stalled ME, given my wife's experience which went smooth for her, I just have an issue with the computer being only 2-3 feet from my face, so close my left eye to see, sometimes, double vision.....but TV across the room is fine, driving is no issue....

Yes with good light. And for the eye drops our guy used a (dropless) procedure. Used one drop a day for a few days before and one drop a day for a week after. They put some sort of medicine ball put inside the eyeball itself.

I thought someone here had a lens put in that after the surgery they were able to have the lens fine tuned for close, medium and far.....that's what i was looking for. I had aregular lens put in one eye and I use readers and it has worked out well.

This is fairly new but found this. Sounds like what we got with the cheap set.

Will I Still Need Eyeglasses With LAL?
Most patients with LAL will still need corrective eyewear, especially when reading small prints. And if both eyes are set for distance vision, they will need eyeglasses for other close-up activities. Nevertheless, the LAL improves the depth of focus, implying that it provides more range of vision than the standard single focus lens.

Most patients can obtain a good range of visual acuity with the LAL if they opt to have one of their eyes slightly nearsighted. However, if a patient finds it difficult to adjust to this difference, they can have it reversed with a second UV light treatment. Although the LAL does not provide as much near range as a multifocal lens, it does not cause additional glare, starbursts, or night-time halos as it does not have rings.

No such thing as an adjustable lens. It's all a compromise. Have a good friend a year older than Frank who had the same issues. One eye is good, the other never came back. He basically now has one 'good' eye that isn't very good. It's not all routine and roses like they say it is. Shit can go wrong, and when it does, often it stays wrong.

You would be wrong again the new ones can be adjusted at least 4 times.

Your vision would improve greatly if you would pull your head out of yaddy's ass!

I've got that on my left eyeball; but not caused by "routine" cataract surgery though. Apparently you wear the "buckle" for the rest of your life.

I agree. Although mishaps from the surgery are rare... it can really mess you up. Since it's same day surgery, and the down time is only 24-48 hours... I'd wait till the last minute, until there is no other option but to have it done.

I had one eye done 10 years ago and the other a year ago. Then after it all settled in a couple months, was fine-tuned with a pair of glasses for driving.

Computer and reading is fine as is

I am on my 4th IOL in my left eye; 30 plus years of eye surgeries dealing with this. All due to a medication I was taking.

your natural lens is "focus-able"; your system makes it change shape slightly to see close up or at distance.

Quote:
How Does The Eye Focus?

You focus light with your cornea and lens.

Your curved cornea bends the light into your eye.

Your lens changes shape to bring things into focus.

When you look at things that are far away, muscles in your eye relax and your lens looks like a slim disc.

When you look at things that are close, muscles in your eye contract and make your lens thicker.
"Typical" replacement lens are fixed focus. If you choose a lens to see perfectly at distance, then you will need glasses to see up close.

If you choose a replacement lens strength that is perfect for reading, then you will need glasses to see distance.

my last replacement lens is inbetween. I need slight correction to see at distance, slight bifocal correction to read fine print. Yes, I always wear glasses; has been that way since my first lens replacement in that left eye... 30 years ago.

Newer "soft" replacement lenses are barely affected by the muscles that do the natural reshaping... if at all.

Think about why -at age- you need reading glasses; your natural lens becomes less pliable. The ability to reshape it to adjust for focus starts to wain.

The Panoptics lens I mentioned in my previous post is not "fixed focus" and anybody that cheaps out with a lesser option (unless there is a medical reason) is cheating themselves...
