Default I'm pretty sure...

It was apparent to Captain Obvious and everyone else just who was at the helm at the time of the disaster. Perhaps a little Manischewitz was involved? Hmmm?

Excellent links there

It appears the power was restored 2x before impact.

Based on this info of wiki:

Quote:
Carries 4 lanes of I-695 Toll
Crosses Patapsco River
Locale Baltimore, Maryland
Maintained by Maryland Transportation Authority
Design Steel arch-shaped continuous through truss bridge
Material Steel
Total length 8,636 feet (2,632.3 m; 1.6 mi)
Longest span 1,200 feet (366 m)
It appears the span to go under is 1,200 feet, so it could have crossed even at a 90-degree spin.
Those damn support beams!!

The original Sunshine Skyway Bridge was a piss poor, designed in 1950.
The span was narrow, had no islands / bumpers.

The new bridge, same name, was done right, huge islands to force ships being straight, with a much wider span.
Even if a ship is out of alignment, it will hit the concrete islands, never the supoort beams.

I knew a couple of men who were harbor pilots, and these guys were very highly experienced and very good at their jobs. They board many different vessels and run them in and out of harbors. And they are very very well compensated.

All of this is true. The ship was not only outside the shipping lane in the center of the channel, it was perpendicular to it, and because the power failed, it was unable to get properly positioned in the channel, thus my suggestion that, whatever failure caused the ship to lose power, this could have been prevented by having the same tugs that escorted the ship out of its slip stay with the ship a little longer, making sure the ship gets to the channel, facing the right direction, and past that bridge. That would add cost for shippers and consumers, and be a windfall for the tugboat industry, as the tugboat companies get paid to basically do nothing but stand ready to get involved if there's a problem, an exceedingly rare possibility.

Actually, the harbor pilot navigates the ship into and out of the harbor...but the tugs take over once close to the pier and the tugs take over and safely dock the behemoths. The tugs also get the ship off the pier upon departure.

you can be sure that the new Key bridge will be well protected from future impacts, similar to Tampa. it'll be tough, that's some deep water there near the bridge, news said about 50 feet to bottom.

at least 4 bags of concrete.....

Gonna be a nice contract for the bridge builder.

Hell, the salvage contractor is going to clean up. Pun intended.

I know every route intimately and every one is the suck when the bridge was not swimming.
