Default came to a realization today that...

I've been receiving a 40hr/week

for Forty fukn years straight.

that's 2080 paychecks so far

even during my bouts of poor health... my employer during those times continued to pay me. I also had gaps between jobs; but always had enough saved-up vacation pay to fill-in until I started at the next place.

I know; I should be thankful for that kind of job security

but this getting up in the morning craap is getting old

I've been collecting a paycheck (many times over 40 hours) for 50 years.

friend of mine said the same thing. He's long retired - but still wakes up early. I asked him why he doesn't just roll over and go back to sleep ?

He said "so many things hurt... that I can't fall back to sleep".

Getting old; everything becomes painful...

When I was still a teen my favorite uncle decided to give me his advice and outlook on the future.

First a bit of back story..

He had been working his whole life after his gig in the Navy during WWII as a painter in Auto Body Shops and was quite talented at it, and he could really lay out some slick paint.

I had been working at a few body shops and was also painting cars on the side and learning as I went.

My uncle had recently got himself a Factory Job as a painter over at Bendix, so set me up with his old employer and I got his old job as a painter in the shop he had been working in.

His Fatherly advice to me was that I find a good factory job that offered healthcare and a retirement program.

And he assured me that after about 40 years I would be happy that I did.

Wow!

I had visions of myself packing a lunch bucket, and carrying a thermos every day.. going off to work in a factory somewhere for the next 40 years and it just did not sound like a lot of fun to me.

While I respected his judgement and plan for himself, it just wasn't for me..

That was about 40 years ago now that I think about it... and I would be retiring soon with a monthly check sometime soon..

While I agree that it would be really nice... I have to admit that while being self employed since 1979 has certainly had it's ups and downs.

I am probably a much happier person doing it my way... and being broke..

I do have quite a few friends who followed that plan, saved when they could, and are now set for life..

if you put your mind to it, you can save a lot of money when you are young and stupid, and later on, before you are old, you'll look like a genius.

it also helps if you marry someone similarly inclined.

today's plan: take trash to dump, go to PetSmart, go to Lowes (have a gift card and need a new tarp), and maybe stop by the gun shop.

New tarp? Are there no Harbor Freights? I'd save that gift card for something better.

I was told something similar. But the world I am living in is not the one he had learned from; in that it's almost impossible to work at the same factory job/company for any real length of time; especially not 40 years
Nothing seems to last more than 10-15 years -tops- these days.

21 years in the USAF in B-52 maintenance units in some hellish places sure paid dividends. The retirement money pays for the mortgage, groceries and even a beautiful 2015 Laguna Blue C7!
