Default Anyone ever meet a REAL 'Made Man'.....

As in shake hands with him, and maybe not even know it at the time??

I have, but if no one else has, my story is with no meaning......

I have a niece that married into an Italian family that ran a large vending machine company with quite a few associated rumors.

At the reception I was introduced to one of the "Family" this way:

"This is Vinnie 'The Barber', he don't cut hair...... "

I knew a kid in HS who claimed that he dad was in the mob. I wasn't impressed, until his dad suddenly opened an X-rated drive-in theater in town, with tiny little screens for each car about 4 foot across. They called it the Mini-Art. It lasted for years. Looking back, how could he do that without some really bad-ass connections - in a town that still had blue laws that made it so you couldn't buy booze on Sunday or even pantyhose.

I went there one time, with another couple, and me with a date I didn't really like in the back seat. We just wanted to check it out. The feature was John Holmes and it was kinda like a real movie. Very strange. Trying to forget this now.

When my dad was in the car business he took me in one day on his day off to a different dealership than he worked at, to meet a guy that owned this other car lot...his name as I recall was georgie?....anyways, my dad said he was in the mob, and flew in to check on the car lot and see friends every so often...I was skeptical.

Guy pulls up in a murdered out 67 Continental...gets out, black pin striped suit, cigar, hat...walks up...shakes hands with some people...(me included), picks up a suitcase...gets back in his car and leaves...

DAFUQDIDIJUSTSEE....

My dad didnt work there..Thank God...

He had a presence about him, he was one of the guys, but he had everyones respect, he carried himself with a ton of swagger, knowing full well, everyone knew what the score was, and no one was going to talk about it...

Since God made all of us in his own image, then we are all "made" men (and women).

At around 14 or 15 I went to a pool party. Walking into the backyard I realized that most every adult guy there had Raybans, white V-neck shirt, and Bermuda shorts, socks and shoes. They all knew each other from the vending company my mom worked for....so, yeah I probably met more than 1.

My wife's grandfather owned a vending company...he was Italian...he never waited for a table at a restaurant...just sayin'

Cyber....the booze I get, but why did you want to buy pantyhose?

An ex.. her dad was a mortician. He went to Mortician school with a guy out of Ft. Lee NJ who family had connections. Ended up going to a broad way play in NYC and we ate dinner in Ft. Lee NJ at this Italian restaurant. The guys that we ate dinner with seemed like they were out of the Sporanos.

On a serious note, yes, I met and shook hands with one in the 1980s. He handed me his business card (from his jail cell in Federal Court) that said simply, "Rocco Russo

Private Contractor"

It was the only business card that ever scared me.

He had been arrested for obtaining Federal funds for hurricane losses on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Problem is, these loans were obtained by false pretenses since he made forged deeds to himself on the properties.

He trusted me enough to tell me that he was a member of the Carlos Marcellos mob family in New Orleans. I got his case transferred to New Orleans, much to his delight. The only reason I tell you this is that Rocco is long dead--I was even invited to go to his funeral--and as I understand it the Marcellos family is extinct. Even if not, I doubt that they care any longer.

I actually liked the guy.

The pantyhose thing, I'll never forget. The blue laws forbid certain transactions, but the most random one was clothing on Sunday. You could not buy articles of clothing on Sunday. One day, while we were getting ready for church, my mom snagged her last pair of pantyhose. Just got my driver's license, so was sent on a quick three block run to the convenience store to pick up a "L'egg" egg - they had a whole rack of them there.

Nope, couldn't buy any. So I returned home empty-L'egged and the hilarity ensued. First I was accused of not remembering, then something else, whatever. I got out of church that day. I'd like to imagine my mom confronted them, hit the clerk with an aluminum bat, and made off with a L'egg egg.

Any "made man" who admits or claims to be "in the family" is never made nor "in the family".

I suspect you are correct.
What was the old thing about introducing people as " a friend of mine" versus a "a friend of ours". Not sure if that was true or not
