The gears themselves aren't that expensive. It's all labor

It's been a few years but I thought Motiv was the only game in town for IRS rears for these. It would be nice to see some other alternatives.

I like Scott's idea about better gearing, but if I do all of the power adds, that might make it unmanageable for my type of racing.
Feel free to give me a shout to knock around some ideas. I spent 10 years with almost every iteration of power adder for these LS blocks.

Really easy to throw gobs of money at constant upgrades because you "wonder" what the next level will be like.

Bummer. Hope it's not too expensive to fix.

If you have to whine about how much it costs, you have no business racing.

Wait a minute, my car only has 16,000 miles on it. Surely this should be covered under warranty, right?

October 25th was 7 years in this car, if you can believe that.

Check the splines on the axles. If there is any twist, replace the axle. Get the center section case magnafluxed. Throw the ring and pinion away. It WILL be damaged. If you can get just the spider gears and clutch packs, have the carrier magnafluxed, deburred and "polished" around all openings and deburr all casting marks and sharp edges.

That being said, what can you get a whole center section for?

Will have to check with Estero Bay. I'll give you a call after I open it up and take pictures.

You might only have problems in the torque tube. Doesn't sound like the posi noises mine made when I blew that up. If you turn hard and drive slow does it make a constant crunching sound?.....mine did. Tore the crap out of the spider gears and pins, clutch pack, blah, blah....

Once it broke, I did not turn hard, unless coasting, and nothing then. Diff has been whining for 6 months, so today's result was to be expected. Regardless what it is, it'll be fun to find and fix.

I hear you. Its about to become not priceless though. Oh look! A new rear end with beefed up internals. New hardened drive shafts. A new clutch!!! Oh wait, I better beef up the tranny to handle this. Well, while I am at it new heads and cam too.

Slippery slope brother.

It is what it is. I'm BORED with this car now.

I WANT TO GO WAY FASTER.

On a side note, I took an automatic (uuugh) C7 Z51 for a few hot laps today. Before my car broke, I turned a 63.2, but it was cold in the morning. I turned a 66.5 in the C7. The best my black C6 can pull off is about 8 seconds slower than the Z. The C7's are amazing. I can't wait to drive a C7 Z.

My room mate Tony had a '66 Malibu sedan with a 283 and 4 speed. One rainy night ( about 1979/1980 ) his girlfriend crashed it.

He purchased a roller '67 Chevelle. It started out put the engine from the red car ( '66 ) into the green ('67) car and change it to 4 speed.

We pulled what we needed out of the '66 and got ready to clean it up to drop it in the '67. It started with another intake. Then we noticed how small the intake passages on the heads were on the 283.

To make a long story short, he ended up with a worked to the balls 350 that put out an easy 450 HP ( remember this was 1980 and that was high HP ) . Basically a balance to 10K super stock short block, 2.02 angle plug heads ported, polished and heat passages welded shut, Scorpion intake and 780 double pumper. He had to add octane booster to SUNOCO 260 so it wouldn't ping.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's a VERY slippery slope. I know you want more power but how much can you really put down without those precious seconds going up in spinning tire smoke?
At the end of the day, it's all throttle control. Just because I have the power (as long as it's linear), the gas pedal is not a light switch. As I move up in classes, I can start changing the suspension considerably, which will help with hookup. 700 might be a tad much, but 650 NA should be manageable. Power adds, weight reduction, racing seats, ..... the car will be way faster. I may never win PAX again, but the car should be untouchable in raw time.
Damn.
All this high dollar gear head talk. And all I currently want is a 65HP John Deere that goes for about 25K new.
Of course, I also want the 100 thousand dollar piece of acreage to play on with the tractor.
