I have an electric fuel pump.
my motor was TBI - Crossfire. I think it depends on the year, IIRC, the head design changed in 86. |

The exhaust pattern didn't change, its the angle of the intake manifold and bolt pattern.

Gen 1 SBC, as far as I know, used iron heads up to mid 86 on the vette, then went to aluminum, but the intake didnt change until 02 with the LT1 (gen2 SBC).
In 87 the Trucks got TBI, and used TBI up until 96 when the Vortec 5700 came out, the vortec heads had different ports, intake mount bolts, etc.. Id think, a truck TBI 350 from 87-95 would work for you.... That said, I dont know of any TBI 4 bolt engines... |

The engine is my truck is a crate reman 350, I think the guy paid like 1500 for it installed, new heads, new crank, new rods, new seals, bearings, cam, water pump...oil pump, distributor, all sensors, thermostat...and it runs great.
3.42 gears on 33" tires and it still pulls an 18 foot trailer no problem, has like 25K on it now, no leaks, or problems. i wish it had more cam, but the previous owner opted for a stock TBI cam... Not a bad price for reliabilty...he got it through Oreilley autoparts. |

I doubt I would have even thought about that myself. The block may not have even been machined for the pump completely. It still may be OK, but would be well worth checking into before spending for parts in the wrong directions. |

Just me... but I would still just clean it out well, and drop some used, or new lifters in it and try it first before spending lots of money and time fitting a new engine in there.

Well I guess I worded that question in a way to show my stupidity. I asked because I have known people who tried to use the in tank pump on a carb with out a regulator. I never was much good early in the morning. What have you decided to do?

I'm going pull the oil pan... although it's supposed to be thunderstorming today, so I doubt it'll be today.
oddly enough, when I first got the car, the DSPO didn't have a regulator on it. he just crimped one of the hard fuel lines... I fixed all the stupid issues like when I replaced the head gaskets. |

How many miles did you put on it before regulating the pressure the right way? The reason I ask is he could have been lucky enough not to have the carb leak externally but still leak down into the engine where it would have gotten past the rigs and washed the oil off everything which could bring you to where you are now. That would certainly explain the debris you found when you pulled the intake the excess gas would have been washing down the cylinders causing excess wear. This all just a guess but it is possible.

I probably put about 100 miles on it before I installed the regulator.
but that was probably 16 months ago. |

Well, we can speculate all we want to but it won't tell us a thing so I guess it's definitely time to break out the wrenches. When you get the pan off, if there isn't anything readily visible post some pics of the inside of the pan and of the bottom end of the engine. With all the sludge you found up top the bigger shrapnel, if there is any, may be stuck in goo in the pan.
