Default I'll see your fuel filter and raise you a radiator

I was so proud of my Superduty yesterday for starting and running like a champ with no diesel gel issues at temps below 0º all day.

Got down to -11 last night, so I plugged in the factory block heater, took off for work and about 2 miles down the road, I get the dreaded "low fuel pressure" warning. Called the service dept. to see if they could get me in and limped in at @ 2mph some 10 miles later.

Got a call from the service manager about 2 hours later who tells me my radiator is shot. ( I guess the small puddles I've seen in the drive weren't overflow).

Ford is very proud of their radiators a little over $1400. I guess it could have been worse - I could have been halfway to town and stalled and had to walk in sub-zero weather.

I have had my fingers crossed the last couple of mornings going out to start the truck. So far, so good in the -4/-7 degree range with it plugged in overnight. It has fired up instantly.

I'm not so sure what additives are in these stupid "winter" blends at various stations so I tossed in some Diesel Kleen anti-gel for good measure.

What motor is in it?

7.3 radiator $226
6.0 radiator $265
6.4 radiator $572

These numbers are on motorcraft radiators maybe 10% or less above dealer cost.
Dont get raked over the coals on parts.

https://parts.autonationfordwhitebearlake.com/

3 hours shop time and 6-8 gals ford coolant.

No way a radiator is anywhere close to $1,400. Unless it's covered under warranty, I'd do it myself for probably 1/4th the cost or take it to a shop for probably 1/2 that cost.

It's got 55k on it. I called a local shop that I trust and the manager said the price quoted is reasonable. There are apparently no aftermaket radiators for this model, his cost would be @ $700 and labor @$500. I am not going to try to install myself, will be out of town for the next 3 days and need the truck as it's my DD.

I guess the new tires will have to wait a while. A couple of nights as a senior gigolo, and I got it covered.

500 Labor?

700 parts?

Thank GOD I got a 6.5 Detroit...

Fuel Filter- 8.95- Takes 2.5 minutes to change

Radiator- OEM AC Delco- $308.00 Takes about 2hrs to swap.

These new fangled fancy trucks are nice but damn they arent doing anyone any favors the way they designed em...and price parts.

Yes well if you had to replace your radiator would you pay 200 dollars more to have one that you know would keep the truck cool on the hottest days? Cooling, lift pump, glows, pmd. The 6.5 is not without it's problems I have done plenty of research on them since I was at one point in the market for one. 6.5 detroit vs any other 2000+ pickup diesel is defiantly not apples to apples.

Back on track, I would say 1200 to have it done is getting closer, if you have the dealer do it (which would be the best option when dealing with a $10k engine) show them auto nations pricing on the radiator at least to get yourself a few bucks.

The dealership that services my truck is not where I bought it, but it's about 3 blocks from my office and they've taken excellent care of me. Oil service is below average cost and every 5th one is free. They put my aftermarket fuel tank on free and got me in first thing this morning when my fuel filters needed to be changed out due to gel.

$10,000? From what I've read, the high pressure injection system on these things is @ $12,000, and a little water blows them up. I use additive in every fuel purchase - I just didn't add enough to allow for subzero temps.

I thought this was going to be my forever vehicle, but I'm not so sure now.

Well yes, 12 k for the stuff that makes the engine run and 12k for the engine itself. Seriously the more I think about what could happen with my diesel I feel like trading it off on a 1/2 ton ecoboost. I think one of the biggest issues on the 6.7 was some of them were cracking valves off and they rattle around in the cylinder causing you to need a new long block @ 12.5k.
Our fuel up here seems to be pretty good I have never had an issue with gelling and it was just -30 air temp -55 wind chill a couple days ago no additive. I have only drained my water separator once and it had only a few drops (when I changed the filter in it after I bought it).
