HR/hiring peeps
as far as selection of prospective employees go... foes the actual subject of the bachelors degree matter as much as the fact that they have one?

Depends on the position.
Good luck getting that engineering position with that degree in 18th Century French Literature. |

I'm looking into a BS.
I have an AS in Electronics, and I'm an Electronics Technician in the Coast Guard. I'm not certain what my plan is when I retire, but I can only assume I'm going to work somewhere else. I'm not really interested in the engineering aspect of the electronics field. Howver, I did find a progrma that really interests me in Space Studies... |

It absolutely matters. If I'm hiring a server/storage engineer and their degree is in "women's studies", they're not getting a look unless they have significant work experience.
Where the degree concentration won't matter as much, is if 2 people apply for a job with similar work experience and one has a degree (any degree) vs someone that doesn't. For me the decision process is: Degree in subject matter>tangential degree in subject matter>4 year degree in other area>no degree. With any hiring process, specific work experience has to be taken into account as well. |

It matters where I work. Everyone either has a Computer Science or Management Information Systems degree. Unless you have a ton of related experience, you're unlikely to get an interview with another unrelated degree.

A BS in Electrical engineering will get you a job and keep you employed. But you will have issues moving up the food chain due to your age.
I strongly suggest you go ahead with BS and work on an MBA as well. Then when you are out of the service you will have a better shot at a management position, and more money. For even more money learn Chinesas as well. |
