My adoptive parents (whom I haven't spoken with in 25 years) scraped by. We didn't have paper towels in the kitchen, we had rags. We were not "poor", but we never had any money.

Not sure any of my siblings ever broke out of that financial pattern, but thankfully I did.

There are several versions for the genesis of the phrase, but my favorite was that people were poor enough to provide urine to tanneries (and explosive makers) for money. The pot is what they needed to exist in this piss poor society. If you didn't have a pot, you are so poor you can't even carry your piss for sale.

Maybe not quite "dirt" poor.

7 of us lived in a double-wide trailer. I slept on the pull out couch. The other three bedrooms were Mom/Dad, Two Bros, Two sisters.

We had a dog and cat also.

I only remember good times during this period before shipping off to the Army then College.
