Default HDMI question

My Dad just got a new Sony BluRay player. It has a 520S in the model number.

It won't work with a known functioning HDMI port on his estimated 2006 Sony Bravia tv.

Sony is telling him the new device has an HDMI port that is incompatible with the HDMI port on his tv. The cable is new and I verified it to be functioning.

Anyone ever heard of this? Are there new versions of HDMI ports that did not retain backwards compatibility? If so it's news to me.

He's probably got HDMI 1.2 or possibly 1.3x and that player is probably 1.4x or 2.0. There may be a setting on the player for legacy HDMI support, maybe.

The model number you gave is useless because there's no such model number. They do have a BDP-S5200, which at least has the four characters of your given number in it. Is this it?

I'd connect it to a new TV that it works with, download the user manual, and see if you can set it to work with legacy HDMI devices.

WTF is supposed to be the 'improvement' in the 'new' HDMI???

SO my ATT/Uverse box works fine with the TV now, but when the lightening eventually gets to it, and I need another set, I have to get another box too??

are the cables different??

The latest HDMI format is for the new 4k 60fps format support. The 1.4x format is necessary for 3D support and 4k 30fps. I'd be shocked if there wasn't a setting on that player for legacy HDMI support, but then again it is Sony.

Sounds familiar with Sony. Recently put the PS3 in the upstairs theater and got the new PS4 for the basement theater.
BluRay plays without incident. BUT, try streaming Netflix etc and you have to toggle the audio output settings from Dolby/DTS to Bitstream.

Even then you only get "multi-channel out" on the AVR with a compressed/simulated surround mode.

Really guys? You want to target and appeal to gamers, online gaming in particular, but you don't seem to think this same crowd streams their movies?

Been attempting to stay current with all the latest HDMI tech changes and it boggles the mind by the time I get to refresh rates and 2 way signal transfer.

Actually another way around this is to connect a modern HDMI-capable receiver with auto-detect. So if he really likes his TV it would be cheaper to find a receiver that does that. But then you'd have a father with a receiver and he'd call you whenever stuff didn't work, because the receiver was off or switched to the wrong input/output.

Reading the Operator's Manual (Sony BDP-S5200 Operating Instructions | Manual Device) that the S5200 automatically converts 2D to 3D. Your father's TV may not be able to handle this.

Take a look at page 24 of the manual and change the output to 2D and see if that helps.

Yeah, they need to connect it to a newer TV, and set it for compatibility mode or whatever, and make sure the max resolution is set to whatever the max resolution is for his old TV.
