Default What's inside a Tesla motor?

A lot of electronics and I wasn't expecting all that tech inside of it.

Watt did I miss?? seen the 3 'phase' electronic assembly, but missed the armature that had to be in the middle of it, seems like a lot of crap to avoid a set of brushes.....the gear reduction is about what I expected......

no serious explanation of watt makes the actual motor run,

The model S uses 3 phase AC induction motors, which as you probably know, consists of little more than a rotor and a stator full of windings.

At about the 4:20 mark, you can see them remove the end cover of the actual motor and spin the rotor around within the stator. Then they tear into the opposite end, which houses the inverter (the electronics necessary to convert DC into 3 phase AC current), and finally they open up the gearbox which is sandwiched between the motor and inverter.

After they got the gearbox opened (pause it at 10:14), it appears they could have just removed those 3 bearing retainer screws and slid the rotor out of the stator...But they didn't go that far.

Yeh, pardon my old so-fist-ic-ated ass, but I wanted to see the windings and rotor of the actual motor, and get an idea of just how it changes speeds, I ASSume by varying the freq of the input power....from looks of the 3 pin spade lugs there, the windings are about 1/4 inch thick, copper I would ASSume....

reading up on my friend's solar panels, and the theory/practice of the power panels they use some ....shit,...can't think of the name/type of transistor/control device, but it's forward voltage drop is about zero at silly high amp/current levels....like .5 volt.......

so the same I ASSume for the control device, just that it seems like awful massive for the heat sinks on their main power control switches,.....by comparison that is.....

Yes, three phase AC induction motors alter the frequency of the AC to control speed. There are quite a few advantages to them versus DC motors. They are mechanically simple except for the control electronics. As long as the electronics are robust (i.e. over-engineered) then there's not much to go wrong. Bet there are some big ole mosfets in that control module.

Sure are, with a forward voltage drop of just .5 volts like the solar setups.....

but the current is much higher off that battery than some individual small panel on a house......so I"d imagine a hell of a stout transistor and heatsink....

Damn. Never opened the business end of that beast! Would've been nice to see the motor and not just the gearbox and electronics.
