KC-135(A) then KC-10 pilot.
First day of OTS was 28Jan86. Walked into our classroom to see the Challenger disaster on tv.

Seems one of the few things people remember where they were. I was sitting in a waiting room watching tv getting new tires installed.

I have not served Active Duty, but I am a spouse, who did her time (20 years).

Kept the home fires burning.

I did not serve. I’ve somewhat regretted that. My sister, dad, grandfather, uncles, cousins and daughter served. Most of them navy. BIL still active duty Marine. My daughter was Air Force.

My daughter’s deployment in Afghanistan meant that our family has been deployed/served in every war that the US has been involved in. In fact, my dad is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Like many here, my dad spent time in Vietnam. He spent most of his time patrolling on the river boats. But that’s all I really know. He doesn’t talk about it much.

One thing about him that I didn’t know until I was older is that he was serving on the USS Liberty when it was attacked by Israel. All he has ever said about that is that it was not an accident.

A lot of people, maybe most people, don’t realize how challenging it is to those who keep those fires burning. Deployments, separation, kids, a job, daycare, frequent moves that are hard on everyone especially kids, the list goes on. Many marriages end in divorce or worse. Youre the backbone to the backbone of this nation and you should be proud. We all owe you a debt of gratitude.

A picture I took from the above SH-2 of our ship near Alaska. I was hanging out the door strapped into a gunners belt. Crazy youth.

Spent two weeks on the Carl Vinson (CVN-70) so got a couple shots of Flight Ops.

If there is interest, I have others.
One of the best times I had was aboard the ship LHD-2 USS Essex.

When I was a guard at the Naval Security Group Detachment in P'cola, one of the LTs was a Seaman (E3) on the Liberty then also. I'm sure they know each other.
One of the crew (XO perhaps?) wrote "Attack On the Liberty
" Scary to read.

My last duty station was Offutt AFB, Nebraska, and while I was there, I was the superintendent of security for these aircraft. They were previously known as NEACP - National Emergency Airborne Command Post (nicknamed "knee-cap"). I flew all over the world in those planes. Offutt SUCKED, but my duties were awesome! These planes are now 50 years old...damn!! Lots of upgrades since my time.

I’ll have to download it to read.

My dad and two of his brothers were all serving in the navy at the same time. My dad and his older brother volunteered. The younger brother was drafted. All spent time in Vietnam.

Despite Vietnam and the Libery, my dad looks at his time in the navy fondly. He does have a lot of good stories about travel and experiences and friends he made. He just doesn’t talk much about Vietnam or the Liberty.

Next time he’s out, I’m hoping to take him to visit the Midway.
