Default Oshkosh

I always wanted to get my PPL, and started towards it 30 yrs., ago, things happened, and never finished it. THE MEGA airshow in the US is Oshkosh with around 10k planes in/out over the weeks events. The majority are GA with VFR rules. It's really cool how they bring them all into the airport. Several yt videos that you can watch. Here is a snapshot of them lined up coming in this year. They also live broadcast the airshow on yt. The show today was all old and new military aircraft. The have an airshow everyday from 2:30-6:30. I'm not sure if it's military or not. Check their yt channel tomorrow for it live.

You don't have to be a pilot to attend, so you should just go. Allow at least 4 days to get through most of it (including the Seaplane Base) and actually see stuff. The Museum is full of interesting aircraft, and the various Type areas are filled with planes and their owners. I worked at it for a couple of years a few years back. 90% of my friends are there now.....

Same. I passed the FAA written test and actually started flying. The problem was time. I'd fly on a Wednesday for example, then because of work commitments and weekend dog shows it'd be a couple weeks before I could fly again. That's no way to learn, it takes forever and it costs more.

Best is to buy a plane with partners.

And actually commit to the training. The other thing I had to ask myself was if I can't even find the time to get the training hours in when am I gonna fly?

I wish I was you guys. I spent two years getting my A&P full time at school. I finished ground school for my ticket and got diagnosed diabetic. 10 years of never ending crap and it just won't stabilize. Its not worth the investment without a clean medical. If you really want it, just go do it before something prevents you from doing it...

A few years ago, my accountant suggested that I look into flight lessons and buying a plane, what with all the travel I was doing at the time. He mentioned a flight club where you pony up some cash, then make a reservation anytime you need a plane. With the club he was in, the plane sat unused most of the time. And, it was all tax deductible.

It runs in my family. My IP told me he had one student go all through the training program. Then, he went to get his medical and failed for some reason. All that money...he said always go get a medical first.

Worked my way through an Instrument/Commercial rating. Wife was never interested in flying anywhere so it became just a really expensive hobby - boring holes in the sky. Took up racing to satisfy my fix and it was much more fun.

Very cool. I’m a military/commercial pilot guy - my advice is put in the work if you want the achievement.

Wow!
That's the truth- also- don't go get your Medical Exam right away. Instead, set an appointment with the Flight Surgeon and discuss the dynamics of the exam. Then, go get a check-up from a regular doctor to cover all the points you heard mentioned. Only if clear on everything do you get the Medical Exam. There was a clause that if you failed the exam, you couldn't get a ticket ever. I doubt t has changed.

One path is to get your Sport Pilot ticket. No exam, and your driver's license is your ID. Limited to flying only daytime/ VFR, but any hours built up apply to the full Private Rating. Aircraft are small and limited in power and load. If you get your Sport ticket, move up to Private and then lose your Private Medical, you can come back down to Sport. If you start at Private and lose Medical, you can't get your Sport later.

In 2017 at Oshkosh I tracked down and talked to a huge number of people in the AOPA, EAA and FAA about diabetes. There was a booth for Diabetic pilots and they had the most informed information of anyone. But I was disgusted to find the #2 person in charge of Medicals, who was a doctor, was completely ignorant of ANYTHING to do with Diabetes. You can have a half a dozen stents and heart attacks and still get a clear medical, but they think diabetics are just randomly going to pass out. Maddening.

Which aircraft class do you race? I've wrenched for International Formula One and Unlimited classes.

Forgot about the sport license. At one time I think you had to stick within 50 miles of your home airport?

Diabetes doesn't get the attention like cancer and I think it's probably a worse disease.

Most Light Sport aircraft carry around 10 to 12 gallons and burn around 5 gallons an hour at around 85 mph. That alone would limit your range- but I know a few folks who have flown from Florida in Light Sports to Oshkosh. Stop once an hour for fuel and bathroom break.

Diabetes short version: Yes, because cancer is usually in one location and can be cut out or treated with radiation. Diabetes affects the whole body and there fore every individual part. No way to just do a simple operation to treat it.- Cancer is also known for the ability to make people donate lots of money. One in three women will get breast cancer! Too bad that nobody gives a damn that TWO out of three MEN get Prostate Cancer....
