A few pics from the zoo...
Went to the Milwaukee Zoo Thursday with my sister's family.
Here is my 11 month old niece Emily, trying to say "enough already, show me the damn animals!" We started off with Apes and Monkeys: This Gorilla didn't do much other than sit there. I don't recall what this is, but it's a face only a mother could love. Don't know what species this is either, but they had super-long tails. These guys were outside swinging on ropes, but they were fast, too hard to get an action shot. Not sure what happened here, I think the camera malfunctioned. This (I think it said) is a Cuban Tree Boa, but it looks like a typical Green Tree Python to me. I was hoping to see an Emerald Tree Boa, those are my favorite snakes. A Mexican Beaded Lizard. This is venomous, much like a Gila Monster. A young Komodo Dragon: A turtle with a really long neck: That's pretty much all I took indoors. Moving outside, the Grizzly Bears: The Polar Bear was a bit elusive. The caves are kept very cool, and on hot summer days (like it was), he would only venture out for a few seconds, then go right back in the cave. I got a few shots though: The Rhino: I think my finger slipped here. The Giraffes: The Elephants. This zoo has 2 female African Elephants. They didn't do much during the day, but we went by them again around dusk, and at that time they were having a fun time playing with each other...picking up plastic 55 gal drums and big tractor tires with their trunks, and throwing them at each other. Hey, they gotta go too... Kangaroos: Baaahh! Feeding the Goats: Sea Lion: Zebra: Zebra + Ostrich. This was rather comical, as the Ostrich would approach the Zebra, the Zebra would shake it's tail, and the Ostrich would retreat, get irate and huff 'n puff at the Zebra. Then the cycle would repeat For Wendy, sorry I didn't get any good pics of the big cats, most were too far away, and then my camera battery also quit around that time, preventing me from getting more. Cheetah. This one was really far away, zoomed in as much as I could: Siberian Tiger: And finally, probably the best pics I took, the Brown Bears. These things are HUGE, weighing somewhere around 1000 lbs. And just after "posing" for the camera, he went for a swim... |

Very cool pics, looks like a great Zoo! Always nice to spend time with the family.
That first primate is a Mandrill and the second is a Black and White Colobus. That white Giraffe is friggin awesome!

What you talkin' bout, those are cool pics of the Siberian Tiger and cheeta. Thank you by the way.
Looks like that Brown Beer was sniffing the air to get a wif of your scent! I told Becky I had never been to the Zoo. I've been told before the summer is out I have too go to the Fort Worth Zoo. I would hate to be on Elephant clean up duty! Last edited by wwomanC6; 08-22-2010 at 2:58pm. |

Some really good shots. That was a good pic of the elusive split tailed man eater.

Hard to see in the pics I posted, but there is a sizeable ditch that runs the perimeter of their area, that separates them from the fence. You can better see it in this pic as she is standing near the edge of it: Even in this pic, it doesn't appear very wide, but I'd say it's probably about 20' wide (and deep). Enough to keep an elephant from traversing it. |

The zoo in Tyler, TX has elephants in the middle of the food court area. You can eat and watch them....if the wind is blowing in the right direction.
Seriously, it's a very cool small zoo. oh yeah...A friend of mine took her niece and nephew there one day, and as they rounded the corner into the food court, the elephants were doing "it." She couldn't get the kids out of there fast enough!!! |

I'd have paid extra to see that!
I always enjoy the zoo. There's always something interesting to see there, no matter what age you are, or what particular animals interest you. Seeing the two elephants so energetic and throwing stuff at each other later that night was huge fun to watch, we probably stood there for a half-hour, they really were that entertaining. Every visit is always something different though, never the same experience twice. |
