Extended Warranty on the Vette...Opinions Please
OK OK...I know this has been covered at Disneyland many times, but I don't go there anymore and I don't feel like searching. I received in the mail today and offer from GM to buy their extended warranty (Major Guard). They want $2000 for 5 years/100K miles. It covers about everything. I could even finance it at 0% (which I probably wouldn't do).
The letter said that this price is good until October 17 or when my mileage exceeds 12,000. I'm not saying it's a good deal or a bad deal, and yes I know it's all marketing shtick. Yes I know it's concurrent with the current warranty (they all work like that). I'm just entertaining opinions from the crew here. What do y'all think? I'm planning on keeping the car for quite a long time, so is it worth considering? Discuss.

Very bad deal Mike, there is a dealer who will beat that by a bunch. PM me or if you are going to be at tomorrow's meeting I'll tell you about it then.

I believe the dealers have some serious leeway on MGPP and you can negotiate the price.

The big thing to consider, is what "can't" you fix on it if/when something does need repair?
IMO, the car will have to be quite problematic to eat up $2000 worth of repairs. Sure, they like to tell you a simple electronic component might cost $1000, or a transmission is a $4k job, but you are smart enough to know there are alternate ways of fixing things outside of GM stealerships. (that's a lot of why we frequent car forums isn't it?). If you really are interested in that peace of mind, put that $2000 in an envelope or in a savings account, and keep it reserved for repairs for that car only. I can just about assure you in 5 years, you'll have plenty of money left there. ps: That offer is usually good up to the time the factory warranty expires. When you got ~30k miles on the car or nearing your 3 years, you'll still be getting those offers, and by then you'll have a much better idea if you think the car will need it. |

Plus the drivetrain should have a 5/50000 from GM so that tranny repair should only be an issue if it happens in 2016, or you rearend a cute girl named Frank.

If that is a Dodge extended warranty with a zero deductible I would say it is a good price because isn't their new car powertrain warranty for 5 years and 100K miles?

A cute girl named Frank? Wouldn't that be a "tranny" issue?

I thought it was a good deal. Chrysler/Dodge warranty with zero deductible covering same as original full factory extended to 7yr/100k. Only things not covered are standard maintenance items. It's a 2009 Dodge Ram 4x4 Lariat with 25k miles so far, so lets see what happens down the road.....

Extended warranties are like playing poker. Sometimes it works out very good to the players benefit and other times the house gets the money. I've never had and extended warranty so I couldn't say one way or the other which is a better way to go.
