I would make an educated guess and say that this BMW was not traded in at a BMW dealer, so no simply CPO'ing it and sticking it on the lot. Nothing odd about that.

The bottom line is that it can't be CPO'd if it's not resold by a BMW dealer.

I also wonder if it actually was traded in to a BMW dealership and there's something wrong with it that is preventing it from qualifying for CPO (was it tuned? after market parts? in an accident? etc etc ) and after it was traded in it was sent to auction because of that disqualification.

I like it but, as the others said, it makes no sense that it didn't stay on a dealer lot. If it were a killer deal it would be worth it, but it isn't a steal. Certified pre-owned with a set warranty from the in service date is something you will not get from this vehicle.

I've gone to many auctions, driven cars back to the dealer from the auction, and sold the cars. More often than not, if a car is at the auction, there is a reason for it.

I wouldn't own an out of warranty BMW either, but that one is still covered under the bumper to bumper warranty.

Looking at the history, it looks like it was ordered for someone, they owned it a little over a year, and traded it in.

That dealer looks like they report all service to Carfax, so doesn't appear to have had any problems.
