In the end, the aircraft was given the less controversial name "Phantom II", the first "Phantom" being another McDonnell jet fighter, the FH-1 Phantom.

The Phantom II was briefly given the designation F-110A and the name "Specter" by the USAF, but neither name was used.

CEO Jim McDonnell was obsessed with the occult and gave nearly all his military aircraft demonic and supernatural names.
I got lucky and was assigned to Clark AB, Philippines. Clark was home to the "Third Herd" or 3rd Tac Fighter Wing. The F4 was a loud mofo and I've had to cover my ears many times due to them taking off and even a coupla times when they "attacked" the base during war games. A story or a picture sure brings back a lot of memories.

Here's a 3rd F4 in flight with the smoke trail you were talking about Julian:

I saved my favorite picture for last. This picture has Mount Arayat in the background. Mount Arayat is still a landmark for the area.

Don't feel bad.....that's how my Mom got the dog to play with me, too.

Actually, we never had a dog when I was growing up....just cats. That's a situation I rectified when I became an adult, er, um, started living on my own.

Saddam might have been using the same playbook thinking the other Muslim countries would come to his aid against the West after taunting the world with WMD threats.
My thoughts, too. Not like the Useless Nations will do anything about the protest we filed, either.

Sounds like them trying to provoke us into a war so they can also attack Israel.

I built that joker, too. In fact, I had the entire Revell (four F4E Thunderbirds in formation) edition model kit.

I saw them perform in 1978 over Godman Army Airfield at Fort Knox and I haven't been the same since! My Dad bought that kit for my for my 13th birthday.
i was amazed to find out that the first versions of the F4 weren't equiped with cannons because they weren't designed for air to air combat. I think later on in the Vietnam war they were given the cannons. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

The consensus at the time was that air-to-air missile technology and supersonic speeds had made a turning fight at gun range a thing of the past.

Reality showed that only one out of every three of the early sparrow air-to-air missiles tracked at a target once let off the rail and the enemy learned quickly the Phantom didn't have a gun and would draw them into turning fights that the Phantoms couldn't win.

Guns were eventually added.

Dogfights Episode 5: Hell Over Hanoi

Damn, I wish I hadda thought of that. I paid cash for the things I bought. Supposedly, the carpet dealy-o I bought is worth much more than the $60 I paid for it.

They also said heat from the jungle vegetation in 'Nam wreaked havoc with the early Sparrow's tracking systems, too, in certain air combat situations.

They later added the pod-mounted, 120 mm. Vulcan Cannon.

The last time my brother was in Iraq, he bought home some ghetto-assed, silkscreened, Hard Rock Baghdad Cafe t-shirt made from panty hose. Gurantee you could only wear it once before it disintegrated.

Supposedly this regular flight in international air space was a "classified" mission for the drone and the incident couldn't be released to the American public due to the classification six days before the election. After the election it wasn't quite as classified and we dummies were permitted to know what happened; as per information release. Like they say, timing is everything.

I was a Military Working Dog Handler stationed at Clark back in '80-'82. One of my tasks was to patrol the perimeter. Sometimes this meant that I would be around the runway. I remember times when I would be at the end of the runway at night watching F-4's taking off with after burners. Way But yeah, loud as shit!
