Ok, but this is a NON-PAYING job so that means they are VOLUNTEERING to be complete douchenozzles. It's not like walking away would cause financial heartache. I could "almost" accept that they need the money and therefore play by the rules. But if there is no money, they just enjoy being assholes.

In a previous life, I was a moderator (non-car forum) for CompuServe in its early days. I did that for several years. It was a difficult and thankless job and I did it for free.

One day the owners told me I had to enforce some ridiculous (to me) rule. I said “adios”, headed for the door, and never looked back.

In my opinion, if you don’t make your livelihood doing this job and you’re told to enforce stupid rules, the only explanation I can come up with is that you get off on controlling people.
