Sales tax doesn't pay for road repairs anyway, so no loss there.

It's one thing to charge EV owners extra at registration time to make up for all the gasoline taxes they won't be paying; it's quite another to demand 4 years' worth of registration fees up front. The latter is clearly designed to dissuade people from buying EVs.

EV's not paying for road taxes is a valid concern and I do support a fee/tax on EV's to make up for the lost gas taxes. It's only fair. Of course, it has to be a reasonable amount, comparable what the average car owner pays in gas taxes per year.

Maybe it is intended to make sure they don 't abandon ship in less than 4 years.

Abandon ship from what?

Whether the original owner keeps his EV for 4 years or sells it after 1, somebody is going to own that car and pay the registration fees. No matter who owns it or for how long the state is going to get their taxes, no?

Owning an EV, or it catching fire in less than 4 years.

It could sit on a lot unsold.

It might be a re-set scam like we have in CA where the parking meters have an electric eye and go back to zero the second you back out of the space.
So you buy your dream EV, pay the 4 years registration up front, realize after 6 months that you can't really use it as a real car, sell it for a loss, and on the point of sale, the registration needs to be paid in full again, because it is 'non- transferable'. Great way to make extra $$$ for the state, and the odds of dumping an EV in less than 4 years are probably about 80% or more.

I don't know man, I didn't watch the 10 minute video, but EVERY time I have bought a new car in NJ, I have had to pay 4 years of registration up front, AND I had to pay sales tax on the purchase of the car. Any links to confirm that these things were NOT applicable to EVs?

Edited to add:

Surprise! Go here:

https://www.nj.com/politics/2024/02/...les-in-nj.html

EV buyers WERE exempt from paying sales tax (I had no idea!), but now they must pay taxes like everyone else. Boo hoo. Cry it out EV slurpers, your tax breaks are ending.

New Tesla Compact EV confirmed for 2025 launch

Tesla has remained tight-lipped on a reveal date for the new compact EV, but Elon Musk has now confirmed that this new budget-friendly electric car will go into production at the end of 2025. Well, sort of.

During Tesla’s 2023 Financial Results call, Musk said: “I don’t want to blow your minds but I’m often optimistic regarding time, but our current schedule says that we will start production towards the end of 2025, some time in the second half.

“That will be a challenging production ramp. We’ll be sleeping on the line practically, but I am confident that once it is going it will be head and shoulders above any other manufacturing technology that exists anywhere in the world.”

Bonus points for the Elon crowd in that we also now know that there will be a non-refundable $500 reservation to get on the waiting list for the giant ass battery pack for the "truck" to get delivered at some unknown time in the future, maybe, probably, I think.

By the time it might actually exist, it should be good enough to at least get back to where you started before the battery degradation.

This directly contradicts the information Steve presented in the video. However, since he lives in Michigan, he may simply be unfamiliar with New Jersey law.

If the "4 years up front" bullshit applies to every type of vehicle then there's clearly nothing EV-related about it at all.

I have lived full time in this state since 1986, and literally EVERY time I have bought a new car, I had to pay the 4 years of registration up front. For my wife and I, it is kind of a pain in the ass because we share our cars as we see fit, so when we do regular annual registration, we pay the extra $5 to get two copies so that we are not trading registration cards every time someone wants to use the other vehicle. When we get a new car, there is no option for a second card, so it is a pain sharing the one card for 4 years.

I think it is a classic NJ screw job. If you are the type who wants to buy a new car, and trade it in on another new car every two years, you basically pay double for registration with no reason I can understand behind it.

I did end up watching the video, Steve does seem a little confused that this is NORMAL for NJ car purchases. BUT, I can see he has a point anyway, even if he doesn't really realize it. If part of an EV registration cost is a $250+ "surcharge" to take the place of the gas taxes EV owners don't pay, then the state is collecting $1000+ of tax up front, which further penalizes folks who want to own a car for 3 years or less.

I'm still not going to cry about it.

No, it’s just indefinitely delayed and the price is now just an estimate.

Have no fear, I’m sure he’ll keep that promise just like he did on the cyber”truck” price… and mileage… and the whole “completely automated self driving” thing… and every other bag of bullshit that he has spewed

My favorite Elon quote:
Quote:
Feb 19 2019: "We will be feature complete full self driving this year. The car will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up, take you all the way to your destination without an intervention this year. I'm certain of that. That is not a question mark. It will be essentially safe to fall asleep and wake up at their destination towards the end of next year"
I guess he wasn’t lying… As long as that destination was an ER

Considering the tax credit, I think that $25k is absolutely doable. This means, the vehicle would have to cost $32500 to be at $25k for the consumer. (97% of consumers.. probably closer to 100% as I doubt that anyone making over $300k household income will buy an entry level vehicle)

You can get a IN STOCK Model Y for about $32990 after tax credit.
