Thumbs up Huge Sigh of Relief
Story time:

My air conditioners are 24 years old. Each Summer, I wonder, is this the year? A few years ago, I had to replace the fan on one of the outdoor condensers. For some reason, the new fan had a lot more complicated wiring scheme than the old one, and the guy who installed it zip tied the wires from the fan motor to the grating on the top of the unit, to run them out of the way of the fan blade. Well, the unit kicks on and I hear.....something expensive. Crap.

Go out and looked at it, the tie strap holding the wires had broken, and the wires were hanging down just enough for one of the wire nuts to contact the fan blade as it was running . I caught it in time that nothing was really damaged. One new tie strap later and we're good.

Wow 24years! I got 12 years out of my main unit and I’m at 15yrs on the second unit which just took 3lbs of freon yesterday...so 24yrs damn I’m impressed!

I credit my neighbor, who had trees that shaded the units from the afternoon sun. Sadly, the new neighbor had them cut down, so that advantage is gone now.

One unit has had a new A coil, condenser fan, and capacitor over the years....the other unit has never been touched.

You may already know this, but always use black zip ties on outdoor applications...They are UV-resistant and won't deteriorate (and break) nearly as quickly as the white ones do.

The one that broke was white. The one I replaced it with was black, because that's what I happened to have in the toolbox. Blind luck, I guess.

I got a lousy 15 years out of my home's original AC unit. Replaced the entire system about 6 years ago with a much more efficient HVAC system with a variable speed fan. Makes a huge difference in fan/air noise and our energy bills are about 1/3 what they were before.
