We use spray paint chalk is from the dragnet days...

If it was 1 perp than it would be 'easy' to track. Since it was a DDoS probably from a bunch of 'zombie' machines possibly via a tor network, back tracking and finding the root probably is not high on the FBI to do list. Although they would probably like to know that a DDoS occurred, incase there were other signature attacks around the same time.
