We need to know more.

Did they ever lose the planes transponder? If they lost radio contact, but not the transponder, that could mean the crew were unable, or unwilling, to use the radio.

If they lost both, that could mean someone in the cockpit turned the transponder off... or the plane suffered a complete loss of electricity.

Turning back, if they actually did, only means that whoever was flying didn't want to be going in that direction any longer, and that could be for any number of reasons including hijacking and mechanical problems.

If it was indeed a terrorist act, you'd think someone would want people to know that it was and who did it, so they could be, you know, terrified.
