Ever Have This?
Pickled herring? Love it especially with the pickled onions in the jar.

I buy the smoked kippers in the tin. I also buy anchovies by the tin and use them on pizzas and in Cesar salad dressing, etc.
But I grew up in the SF Bay Area, so I'm rather culinarily sophisticated---I don't eat overcooked meats, put ketchup on steak, or eat biscuits and gravy. I have a more STS type of pallet, but without the massive portions and resulting bowel movements. |

You kidding me, raised in a Dutch household. Dad considered this a delicacy, mana from God.

And I sincerely hope that does not mean that you like to blow strange men at truck stops in the back of your van. Because that is just nasty. |

Yup! Bought a jar this morning. I prefer the one in wine sauce.

Good Lord, not from a jar. Find a place that does their own or do it yourself. Like ordering steak in a jar.
"Fresh" and "pickled" doesn't necessarily go together, but good deli pickled herring is still firm and has a much milder pickle. If you happen to find yourself in NYC, visit Barney Greengrass on the upper west side near the Natural History Museum. If you like cured fish, this is the Mecca. |

But after I grew up I tried it, and really liked it. My Swedish aunt would often have pickled herring, cheese, and homemade bread for lunch. |

My mom and grandma always had this stuff out for the holidays, Thanksgiving thru New Year's Eve. Always in the cream-style sauce, which had a small amount of cream added to the wine sauce. I never enjoyed it. Minnows. |

I have Norwegian friends, so I've had it many times. IMO, it is much better with some "Frank's Red Hot" sauce on it. Apparently, they consider that "non-traditional".

Plus one for the creamy style. Here in Da Souf I have trouble finding it...
along with eggplant caponata (no not together, you degenerates). Can't even find a decent Polska Kielbasa; have to import those from Massachusetts when we get to visit. |

I'm not much of a fish eater anyways and I would hurl chunks with this stuff.
It has to fried in a batter for me to eat it. |
