Many, many years ago when I graduated high school and my first wife and I were dating (1979) I had a Camaro that was reasonably quick. Not a dragster by no means, but for a slightly modded street car it was all right.
One night I stopped at the light on our local street racing road. A few seconds later a '70 Coronet rolled up next to me. I exchanged glances with the driver, dropped the shifter into low, and placed my left foot on the brake. She looks over at me and says. "Don't do it." I replied, "C'mon, I can take him. Best it could be is a 383, and likely a two barrel." Her: "Don't do it. I don't want to be in the car when you do this." Me: "C'mon." Her: "You're gonna do it anyway, aren't you?" Light turns green, I floor it, and after about five seconds I was watching nothing but tail lights. I mean I actually looked at the tach to make sure mine was still running. So we roll up to the next light and there he was. Waiting. I looked over and yelled out, "Watcha got in that?" He replied, "440 with a six pack". Damn. She just kept snickering and muttering, "I can take him. I can take him." Obligatory pics, Camaro and ex (about the time we divorced, 1991) |
