I punched a clock last when I worked for MB as a lot boy. Those were simpler times! Pay was shit, but I spent it all on having fun!

I was a lot boy in '67 and '68 in my senior year, at a Pontiac dealer. Worked a lot of hours and it was the first time in my life that I got a $100+ paycheck.

Greatest job I ever had, except for chiseling off rusted license plate bolts. Everything else was great fun: I got to drive GTOs, Corvettes, and anything else that was fast, along with Bonnevilles, etc. And on Friday nights I often had to disconnect the speedos on new cars so the salesmen could drive them over the weekend, without putting any "miles" on them.

I suppose they don't call them "lot boys" anymore though -- there's no more mechanics, janitors, or strippers either. Not sure what else to call my old job.

Had to punch one of these during boot camp. Training for guard duty. I recall one guy lost his clock and claimed a tidal wave got him while he was walking the beach They figure he fell asleep and tossed it in to get rid of the evidence. Don't know what ended up happening to him but what a dumb ass... I missed a couple punches and nobody ever said a thing about it.

Nothing like ripping around in the new cars, and also some of the 'spicier' used cars as well! When I was hired, the existing low men on the totem pole didn't like that I was there - apparently it threatened them - so they did everything they could to **** me over! But I survived it all - mostly because it was pretty tame (looking back). I told nobody, and won over the guys by suffering in silence! Here's something that the average millenial/genZ could learn from. Good times! I fine tuned my stick shifting delivering parts around town in the toyota pickup truck we had for deliveries! AWESOME!!!

I worked at a small dealer, so I was the only one on the bottom. But the older guys were great.

Worked with a guy doing doll-ups, hung around the mechanics, learned how to use a tire machine, went to the dumps, got subs for the salesmen on Saturdays. I could take any used car and slap a plate on it, so I always picked the subs up with a GTO or whatever else caught my eye.

They took in a '68 Vette on a trade, it wasn't even a model-year old yet. I drove it a couple times, 427, 400 HP, stick. For a 17 year-old kid, that was pretty wild.

The service dept. was open til 8 on Thursdays, and the mechanics would put beer in the toilet tanks to keep it somewhat cool. There was no fridge so it was better than nothing.

I've never drawn a salary in my life. We lowly blue-collars, who got paid to build things with our hands, had to punch clocks.

This may be the second thing you have in common with Doug. You have two things in common: you both live in Florida, and you both have never punched a clock and never will.

The last timeclock I punched (mechanical stamp) was about 1985. Then they changed to computerized sign in. We used to have to timestamp the job orders, too, to keep track of hours on the job. From 1996 on, when my career changed, it was a monthly timesheet, no clocks or computer inputs.
