Balancing is one of those things I would DEFINITELY do (and have done) if I were building a high performace engine that will spin over beyond 5K on a regular basis. This one won't. I'm going to forego balancing on this one. I doubt it will see more than 4K very often.

Pony update!

Shock towers are repaired. Cut out bubba repairs, heated and straightened right side, welded in C-Channel with 45 degree reinforcement. Stronger than the day it was born. Have a full suspension rebuild kit sitting in the garage. Next stop, finish cleaning and painting stuff, and put the front suspension back in it. Then order power disc brake kit, and power steering conversion. Those will set me back another $1800. Transmission goes off to be rebuilt in a couple of weeks as well. Then I can finish the engine.

Some pics....

Suspension out....and shock tower repair done.

Shaping the C-Channel....

Fire in the hole!! My buddy welding the driver's side.....he's a much better welder than I. Yes, I was wearing a welding helmet when I took this pic....still have my retinas.

Heating it up to bend it back into spec. Heat, bend, measure, repeat. We got it pretty close....they weren't perfect even when new. The shop can align the car now and it should drive correctly.

And cutting out the old bubba repairs from the drivers side....

More later.....

It's amazing how this can make you feel like a 10 yr old at Christmas time. Pretty cool Friz, keep it coming.

Parts for REALLY old ones are cheaper than just plain old ones. My '91 needs new horn buttons...both fell off! $125 bucks for a 1 inch button. My 140mph speedo went up and I had to replace it with an 85mph. I can get the 140 or 160 police versions, but it's $700 or so...
Had to get a mechanic to fabricate some small connectors that aren't available at all...
All this for a DD

I'm having a blast with it.

1. It's simple. After working on Corvettes, this thing is stone age. I love it.
2. Parts are cheap and abundant. No such thing as an Old Mustang Tax".
3. This body style is drop dead gorgeous. The American carmakers could do no wrong back then.
4. One of the few cars where you can get most, if not all, of your restoration money back down the line if you buy it right, do your own work, and are careful.

If all goes as planned, it rolls out by Aug 1, and goes to paint and body from there.

Ive been following your project and you keep mentioning how cheap parts are. I may look into something but, nothing sure. It would be a SBC, automatic for it to be a cruiser and a shower.

Your 'Stang will rock, no doubt about it.

Pete, this thing is so much fun....no electronic bullshit. Go to Mustangs Unlimited - Mustang Parts Superstore - FREE shipping! and look up any part you'd like....you'll see what I mean.

Old muscle cars are a hoot. Can't wait to be cruising this one. And the project may be getting fast tracked.....details soon once I'm certain.

Got a little done this weekend.....

Passenger side fenderwell scraped and painted. Has some 42 year old undercoating which fell into one of two categories.....flaking off in chunks, or not coming off until judgement day. The former got taken off, the latter left on.

This fenderwell alone took me an afternoon of hard work to prep and paint. For your perusal....all the nasty yellow overspray is gone now. Looks better in person than in the pic. Going to do fenderwells in flat, underhood in gloss.

Nice thing....not a spot of rust on this car. Gotta love the desert Southwest.

Also got my spindles cleaned up this weekend, but that was about it. Had to do my taxes this weekend, and between the two, it killed a three day weekend. Yes, Uncle Sam just committed financial sodomy on me.

Anyhoo.....more later.
