Default Friends lost their house....

Syd's farmhouse burned to the ground around noon today; the cause seems to be a gas-powered golf-kart that he used quite a bit. The kart was parked under a porch and apparently caught fire, which in turn torched the porch and the rest of the house. Syd received some facial burns but otherwise everyone is safe

My uncle and his wife lost their home on Thanksgiving Day from a devastating fire. My aunt was cooking Thanksgiving dinner when she says the kitchen got dark. She saw the windows were black and the fire was outside the window on the porch. She was able to rescue her 2 year old granddaughter from the bedroom. My uncle got burned on his forehead trying to shut the door on the flames. They lost their most beloved pet “Little Dog” and their two cats. They have also lost every single thing in their possession minus the clothes on their backs. The fire was started from a golf cart parked under the house that my uncle used to get around because of a bad leg. (He was already a burn survivor from a fire as a child).

They will be starting their lives from scratch.

sounds like they left the golf cart running, and it sprung a gasoline leak, and so goes a HUGE house some of which was ~200 years old.....overlooking a YEUGE swimming hole pond down the hillside a ways.....in the middle of the Appalachian mountains Va. or W. Va........so they moved into an old ancient barn they had rebuilt into living quarters for other family members who moved out recently, so thankfully they have a place to stay, but need go to find all the contents of a house......

I know of 3 or 4 people who have lost a house from gas engines and leaks under carports or in garages. And a few more lost just a garage. Sad for them man..
I'm a paranoid freak about anything hot being put inside. Keep large extinguishers all over also.

This has me paranoid. I have a pressure washer and lawnmower in my garage and they usually have gas in them. I don't have any ignition source (water heater etc.) in there but I suppose a light switch is a possibility.

99% of thw time the gas is ignited by hot engine itself not an external source.
I don't worry about gas in a tank inside like mower tank, however i do not store gas cans nor propane inside. I let every engine outside before storing. Also do not refuel around a building, who was it at other place burned house and burned arms years back refilling mower?

Fire is no joke! I went through a wildfire back in September last year, it took our property out, 5+ acres reduced to dirt. Scary stuff to GTFO at a moments notice. I still have a hard time when I smell a fireplace or if it's windy. We'll pray they get the help and support your friend need to get back to normal.

Started in a place you would never put an alarm at. You could not hear it anyhow.

Makes want to spend a couple of hours to put my alarms up that are sittting around and showing my wife how to use the fire extinguishers I bought and just put away.

My son knows how to use an extinguisher.... Unfortunately.
I was cooking aka throwing some grease flames uo on grill one day cooking burgers many years ago with back to th e door. My brain didn't register him saying outloud as he read the label... Remove safety pin, aim at base of fire and pull trigger. beer may have c slowed my reaction.
He nailed the grill from 15 ft i bet just as my brain said uh oh and turned around. No more flames. Glad it wasnt the big extinguisher. Totally sucks cleaning that stuff out of grill BTW.
It had been fire prevention week at school just that week and they gave an extinguisher demo. Lucky me.

Seriously i keep one mounted by every door, houseand barn and check them regularly. I set a car in a garage on fire years ago and only had one small extinguisher. Almost cost me a garage.
